is a 51/4 floppy drive compatible with atari carts

Recommended Posts

okay for those exact english people, I ran out of space for a queston mark, for the person who doesnt get it I rewrote it, for those who think im a noob thats true

now then JUST AWNSER THE QUESTON, nothing funny ok?

for those who dont know what im trying to do, im planning to mod my atari fb2 so it can play atari games. Our friend ben (the guy with the cool portable website) used a 51/4 floppy drive for his portable, rather than looking for one or ordering one from best electronics, I know that fry's electronics probably has a 51/4 somwhere so, I wanted to go the faster route rather than waste a perfectly good atari 2600. Will it work?

well can it? thats what Ben used when he made the portable 2600; but can it be used for modding an fb2?

No Benjamin J. Heckendorn has never used a 5 and 1/4 Floppy diskette to create a Porable Atari 2600.

But I think the main question is will Ben make a Portable 2600 out of the Flashback 2

because this would be a lot smaller

and a lot less power consuming product.

Re: "Will a 51/4 floppy drive for a atari 2600 cart?"

The title of this thread seems to be missing a word (or more) because it makes no sense. If gamer1682 would read it again S-L-O-W-L-Y and make corrections or post what he really meant, somebody might be able to answer the question.

Else, my best answer would be, "No, a 51/4 floppy will not drive for a atari 2600 cart."

you forgot something there Mot, I said FLOPPY DRIVE NOT FLOPPY DISK.

I liked the way that you added alll that information but you were talking about a diskette NOT A DRIVE.

Well first off, I don’t think anyone truly knows what you are asking.

But if you have a FLOPPY DRIVE, you MUST use a FLOPPY DISK in the drive otherwise it will be good for nothing. Unless you are trying to say something to the effect: "Can parts from a 5 1/4 floppy disk drive be used for an Atari 2600 cartridge?”

And maybe you are thinking (like Retro Archaeologist had thought you where asking)

Can you use a 5 1/4 floppy disk drive type ribbon cable to add a Cartridge Port to your Flashback 2?

And if this is your question look at Hacking the Atari Flashback and particularly Page 3 for your answer.

And if you are still asking something else; please reword your question and we will be glad to answer it.

I'm thinking no, the 51/4 floppy drive is busy tomorrow, so the 2600 cart will have to drive itself.

...or take the bus.

If you know Ben Heckendorn used it, why are you worried it won't work?

OK I think I got it! Here is what he is asking:

I have (or I can get) an old 5 ¼ inch floppy disk drive connecter with the ribbon cable. Can I use this connector instead of ordering a new 2600 cart connector + new ribbon cable, or cannibalizing an old 2600 just for the connector, to hack in a 2600 cartridge connector into my Flashback 2?

In other words, will an old 5 ¼ inch floppy disk drive connecter be used to put 2600 cartridges into?

It seems that Ben used one for one of his projects, see the picture above.

A. Ben already did it, so the question has already been answered.

B. You never once (and still haven't) said that what you want to use is a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive cable or connector.

The subject line now reads, "is a 51/4 floppy drive compatible with atari carts". The answer to the question, exactly as it is written, is still no - a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive can not read Atari cartridges. Well, not quite exactly - you keep writing "51/4" floppy (whatever fifty-one fourths is...)

In order to express yourself more intelligibly, try just getting the general idea in the subject line, and put the actual question in your post. For example: [sUBJECT] 5 1/4 Floppy cable connector for 2600 cart port? [MESSAGE] In one of his projects, Ben Heckendorn shows that he used an old 5 1/4 inch floppy drive cable and connector as a cartridge port in a portable Atari 2600. Does this really work, and how good is it? I want to do something similar with my FB2.

Remember, nobody is a mind reader - if you leave words out (especially the important ones like subjects and verbs), people will either need to guess or simply have no idea what it is that you mean.

On the other hand, I don't believe that any of the forums here are the best place to ask this - try emailing or PM'ing Ben himself, or post in one of his forums.

I figured this one out...

Ben used a floppy cable in his portable 2600 what this guy is asking is can the same

type of thing be done with the Flashback 2 (as opposed to a reg 2600) if you are

adding a cart port to that device.

Seem's logically like it could be done since the cart port is the same.

AAAAAAAACtually....The cable I think he is refering to is the smaller of the two MFM HARD drive cables.

Older PC's (early 1990's) had MFM or RLL Hard Disk Drives. It predates the IDE type that has been the standard for soooooo long.

If I recall, MFM/RLL drives used a 34-pin cable and a separate 24-pin ribbon cable. The 24-pin cable is the type that fits.

It appears to be the same size card edge connector. A PC floppy cable is and has always been a 34 pin cable...too big.

Hmm, i never thought about that.

Buy a cheap cd rom drive, gut it and turn it into a portable.

Interesting idea...
