Room 34

Just played Journey... and it's actually fun!

Recommended Posts

As a kid, I owned (and quickly came to loathe) Journey Escape for the 2600. (What can I say, we got it in a 5-pack of games by mail order when the crash was hitting. The others were Space Cavern, Infiltrate, Space Jockey, and Towering Inferno. But as usual I digress...)

I think I had seen Journey in the arcades once or twice, but I figured it was the same ol' crap I already had at home, so I never tried it. More recently, I had seen some screenshots (with the over-the-top corny, black-and-white floating heads of the band members), and didn't think it was worth my time.

Well, tonight I decided, what the heck, and I gave it a try in MAME. And... it's actually kind of fun! I immediately noticed similarities (bordering on total rip-off) to Gravitar. Partly that was because the first player I went for was Neal Schon. Next I tried Steve Smith and found it to be an amusing combination of Circus and Q*Bert! I haven't tried the others but I will probably do so soon.

What a surprise!

Journey actually is pretty fun. I play it on my MAME cab. every once in a while. The worst part of the game is having to listen to Journey's crappy music. At least they don't have Steve Perry's digitized voice...my head might explode in agony :)

I like the drum bounce level the best.

I remember this game as well! I just thought it was so neat that they had the guys' heads all pasted in and everything. I really hated the one where you're on a conveyer belt and have to jump over the hurdles...my timing is awful.

BTW the Starcade score-to-beat on this game is 1,614 in 30 seconds - just had to throw that in there. Piece of cake if you can get through the microphone level with the swinging gates. The actual contestant had no clue what to do and scored only 60 points!
