Problem with PAL-NTSC Conversions

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys! I'm new!

I'm having a problem with a couple of the PAL-NTSC Conversion roms on AtariAge--specifically Laser Base and Ewok Adventure.

I put them on a cd to play through the Cuttle Cart, but on my TV the bottom of the game screen is cut off. It's particularly irritating with Ewok Adventure because I can't see the information icons so the game is pretty much unplayable.

Is anybody else having the same problem?

Thomas Jentzsch his NTSC conversions of Pharaoh's Curse and World End (AKA Laser Base) have 282 and 279 scanlines.

All the others have less scanlines.

So your saying that there are too many scanlines in a few of the conversions for my TV to read and it's clipping off the bottom?

Are all of the Ewok Adventure repos this way?

I have Pharaoh's Curse, the PAL Technovision cart. I remember trying to play it on an old Commodore monitor, & the bottom of it was cut off. I couldn't ever figure out what to do. :( Waiting for CPU to release this one as well. :P

Yup, since I was too lazy to change the kernel, which is pretty huge.

Ewok may have a vertical centering problem. But there exists a "official" NTSC version of the game, so the problem has become irrelevant.

There may be an NTSC version of Ewok Adventure, but AtariAge hasn't released the rom for it yet.

Thomas, there's a PAL game I'm interested in playing. It's called Motocross. I think it's a pretty common cartridge in Europe. AtariAge mistakenly has a screenshot of this game for Xonox's Motocross Racer. Have you considered converting this game to NTSC?

Did you search the forums? I am sure it has been posted somewhere.

That's a tough one, because the used screen is really huge (~240 scanlines). I had to decrease the visible screen by about 20%, making the game probably unplayable.

Thanks guys! I didn't know you were hiding roms in the forums. Pretty sneaky!

I'm actually having trouble with one more game on the Cuttle Cart--Dumbo's Flying Circus. Every once in a while during gameplay, the screen rolls once quickly. Has anybody else had a problem with this rom?

Thomas, I was just looking through my old posts and I found this first one (Oh, the memories...). I didn't notice then that it appears you attempted to convert Motocross to NTSC. If so, could you post the ROM? I'd like to see what it looks like on my system. Thanks!

I have only an unfinished version on my HD, due to the problems with the huge display. I may have another look at it, but IIRC converting the game to NTSC timings didn't seem easy at all. I could to a NTSC-50 version pretty easily.

What's NTSC-50?

NTSC colors but 50Hz only.

Yeah, I still don't know what that means. :? But I don't care, as long as the game doesn't roll on my system. :)

IF PAL carts roll on your system, this one would roll too. Just with the correct colors rolling. ;)

Alright, I understand now. I see why that's a quicker fix, but that's no good for me.

Thomas, when you have time, can you see if it's possible to convert it properly for NTSC? Thanks! :)

Well, try those. I had to reduce the playfield area massively, so the game is much tougher now, maybe even unplayable.

I attached two versions, just in case the 282 lines version rolls on your TV.

Man! You are so fast these days! :o Before I can finish typing my request you've got the game hacked and posted.

I'll try these out tonight on the Cuttle Cart. Thanks again, Thomas! :)

Well, it's already been unplayable garbage to begin with ;)

Hmmmm... I kind of like this game. But I've only played it in the emulator. I guess I'll wait and see what it looks like when played on the real thing. ;)

Sorry, I wasn't able to try these out until yesterday...

The 274 line version is easier to play because of the larger playing area, but rolls quite often on my TV. The 282 line version plays fine until you pass the first stage then it rolls a lot when the 2nd stage starts and then settles down again. I think it might roll again at the start of the 3rd stage. Does the line count increase at the beginning of the stages? Is there any way to correct this without losing even more playing area?

Also, in many of the other PAL-NTSC conversions I've played, the bottom of the screen is cut off. It seems like in this game you cut off the top of the screen instead. Am I right?

No, I suppose that's the result from me trying to reduce the times the games needs outside the display kernel. It seems that I went too far. But since it seems that your TV can handle 282 lines, I have attached another 282 version, with a few less visible lines. Is that one stable?

No, if your TV already cuts of at the top, we don't have much room for improvement here.

Yes, I had to reduce the visible area (above the status display) massively. Since the game was already badly centered before, the NTSC conversion also is. Sorry, there is nothing I can do against that.

Oh Jeez! I'm an idiot. I mixed up the 274 and 282 versions in my post. The version that doesn't roll as much on my TV is the 274. Can you reduce the visible lines on this version? The 282 was the one that rolled a lot on my TV.
