SMS Light Phaser acting screwy

Recommended Posts

Last night I was all set for some Wanted on the SMS but my gun, which has never given me a problem before, would not work right. It was registering that I was hitting the trigger but no matter where I pointed, it treated it as being offscreen. I opened the gun up but couldn't see anything that was obviously wrong inside. After I put it back together it worked on and off.

Any ideas why this would happen out of the blue?

I acquired a light gun not long ago and it had the exact same problem. One of the wires running through the cable had frayed near the handle and required some surgery. Bending the cable in a certain position allowed it to work (and is a good indication of a frayed wire).

I don't recall exactly how I fixed it but I do remember disassembling the gun, using an X-acto blade to slice the cable to expose the frayed wire, fixing it, then reassembling. I pushed the sliced cable further into the gun so it wasn't exposed, resulting in a shorter cable but a functional light gun.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Last night it was working perfectly again so I suspect you're right about he cable. Next time it starts acting up, I'll tackle it.

That fixed mine. I booted up Crossbow and pulled that cable up to the phaser's handle--no more odd noises! The wire was indeed messed up at the grommet where it exits the handle. I thought it was just a fluke and it didn't like my 7800 after the mod, but it works great now!

It was misfiring a lot, too, but that was because of the wire.

I've got a SMS light gun that makes the console malfunction. With the gun plugged in, the screen is blank. When I plug in the regular controller or my other light phaser, it works fine. Does the same thing on both my SMS consoles.

One of these days, when I'm not so lazy, I'll pull it apart and look for shorted wires.

If the screen is blank it must be registering as if it was constantly firing. The trigger switch is probably bad.

You should be able to fix the trigger switch. Drill out its rivets, open it, and unstick it. It can be reassembled with tape.

I found this out the hard way--when internally modding the SMS gun for a 7800, you have to open the actual trigger switch and move some contacts around.
