Flatout... and other racing games (PC)

Recommended Posts

It just took #2 on my all time fav racing games list.

1) ReVolt - Mini R/C car racing at it's FINEST!!

2) Flatout

3) MX Madness 2

I got Flatout last week (pc), and I've got to say I'm very impressed, I've been playing a LOT of it and just finished the career mode.

Now, I haven't played a whole lot of racing games, am I missing out on some real gems out there, (is my "bar" too low)?

I don't like the super-realistic, hard to drive, big learning curve sims. I like my driving action a bit "arcadey".

Can anyone recommend pc racing games based on the above?

I'd really like to find good GTP, F1, and Street Bike racing games (not too realistic).

Burnout 3: Takedown doesn't just beat Flatout... it beats it in the same way that Foghorn Leghorn beats a beagle in a Warner Bros. cartoon. Once you try the fast-paced highway battles of Burnout, you'll never go back to Flatout again (except for the clever mini-games, which Burnout admittedly doesn't have).

OutRun 2 isn't too shabby either, although it's more limited in scope than either game. If you like your arcade racing REALLY simple and straightforward, but still fun, give it a try on the XBox. I played it in arcades and it seems like a very solid sequel to the original game released in 1986, with graphics that are almost as impressive now as OutRun's were twenty years ago.

There's several good F1 games, but they're all very much simulations, though you can tone things down in the menues (Especially for EA's F1 stuff like F1 2002 and F1 Challenge). F1 Challenge 99'-02' comes to mind as the best modern F1 sim(I think there's a nice Group C mod for this), and Grand Prix Legends for historic F1.

There's a really nice GTP mod for NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, but I'm afraid that game cost a good bit to buy these days and its a simulation and not easy.

Re-Volt is definitely one of my favorite racing games. I don't know if you've done this yet, but you may still be able to find user-made tracks online. And I don't mean tracks made with the crappy included track editor. I mean tracks that are just as good as the tracks included with the game. Try looking for "all instance" Re-Volt tracks.

As far as other racing games on the PC go, one game I love is called 1nsane (by Codemasters). It's an off-road racing game with a ton of different modes, from regular racing to checkpoint racing to capture-the-flag and more. The physics are incredible, but it's pretty easy to get into and not very realistic (when your car gets too wrecked to continue, you can instantly repair it with a button press). You may be able to find it on Ebay. It's a few years old, but it still looks good.

I'd definitely recommend 1nsane, if you can find it.

cryptik76...... thanks for letting me know about the Revolt tracks... Downloading NOW!

I had downloaded a few a couple years ago and they just weren't very good, I'm glad to know there are some people out there who love this game.
