You can't go wrong with the Time Crisis' or Point Blanks.

Stay away from Judge Dredd. That is the only gun (or any) game that I returned because it stank. It was extremely BAD!

Project: Hornet Owl was above average.

Crypt Killer was average.

Die Hard Trilogy 1 was pretty good. Has a Virtua Cop feeling to it.

DHT2 I have but haven't played it yet.

Gun Fighter, The Legend of Jesse James I have but haven't played also.

Crypt Killer

This is a regular (non-GunCon) gun game. It's your traditional arcade monster blaster, typified by enemies popping up on the screen faster than you can machinegun them.

The backgrounds are crude polygon models, and the enemies are sprite/bitmaps (mostly clunky looking skeletons). In terms of design aesthetics, it definitely has a Ray Haryhausen atmosphere, which the game readily admits.

For the most part, it's just a blaster; technique mostly leaves its hat at the boot screen. It can be amusing 2 player simultaneous.

It's a good, quick, two player blastathon and warm-up for something else, or just to get your blood pumping. I'd say if you can find it for under $15, go ahead and get it for a cheap thrill.

Elemental Gearbolt

A simple but fun light gun game. Graphics are very low key, but the game is GunCon compatible. Targets seem a bit sparse early on, but ramp up later.

I own this one, but haven't played it much. It's OK.

Gun Fighter, The Legend of Jesse James

This is a western themed Time Crisis rip off. Grapics are all polygon for this game, but aren't up to the stellar Time Crisis standard.

The feel of the game is very similar to Time Crisis (below), but the difficulty doesn't ramp up as smoothly, and cheap hits are fairly prevalent. Still, the game does have it's own grade B charm.

If you can find it cheap, go for it.

Project: Hornet Owl

An anime themed light gun game. This is another non-GunCon compatible one. This one's gimmick is that you can have different shot effects depending on how long you hold the trigger down to charge.

Backgrounds are generally polygon (if memory serves) and the targets are all sprite/bitmapped mecha type things.

This one is particularly hard. IMO, it's not particularly rewarding. I'd recommend avoiding this one unless your a gun game completist.

Time Crisis

This one is the king of light gun games. My favorite spy organization ever has given you a cool jacket, a gun, and unlimited ammo. It's up to you to rack up the body count.

Light gun games are often divided into two kinds of variants "shoot often" or "shoot accurately". As examples of the "shoot often" theme, I offer the earlier Crypt Killer and House of the Dead series. Time Crisis is of the "shoot accurately" variety, typified mainly by this series and the Virtua Cop games.

The environment is all polygon and all enemies are polygon models as well. The game set new high standards for visuals in light gun games when it was first released. Oh, and it's also the origin of the GunCon, which lives up to the hype as the best light gun available for a game console.

Time Crisis's main gimmick is the reload pedal. You step on the reload pedal to not only reload your gun, but also to hide from enemy fire. This is counterbalanced by a strict time limit to the game. Take too much time and its Game Over man.

I like the reload pedal better than the "shoot offscreen" method because you don't have to shift your aim and can keep yourself more focused. Plus, it just feels more natural to press a button to reload than fire offscreen/cover up the barrel and fire.

Definitely buy this game and a GunCon.

Time Crisis - Project Titan

This is like a Time Crisis scenario disc, although it stands alone. The missions are harder, the shots are more challenging.

The bad? In many cases, frustration stands in the place of challenge, and the graphics aren't as nice as the original Time Crisis (they're just barely above the Gunfighter level).

The main gimmick is the ability to shift your location during boss fights. Sometimes bosses can only hit you when you're hiding in certain areas. And sometimes you can only hit the boss if you're hiding in a certain place.

Of course, the reload pedal is here.

Whether you get this one should depend on how much you enjoyed Time Crisis. If you loved it, get Project Titan. If Time Crisis didn't absolutely scratch your itch, you might want to avoid Project Titan.

I know this isn't answering the question, and isn't terribly helpful, but ...

PSX gun games, meh. Play the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast gun games instead.

Virtua Cop

Virtua Cop 2

The House of the Dead

The House of the Dead 2

Confidential Mission

What else would anyone need?

I have Gunfighter: LoJJ but havent spent much time w/ it. It's NOT compatible w/ the GunCon2 (as I was told elsewhere) but all right as lightgun games go. The graphics are quite angular & choppy (you'd think it'd look a bit better so late in the PS1 life cycle) & the main strike against it is that as you're ducking/hiding for cover, you can move the crosshair (if you're using the controller) to where the target WILL be when you pop up & hit it every time. This would involve lots of memorization, though.

& there's a target-shooting minigame where you have to blast away all the bottles in a given time, & there are 2 "bad" bottles but they appear in the same place EVERY time. They should've been able to move them around, appearing in random locations.

I think I'll play it again this weekend, & post more info for you...
