So what am I going to do?

Recommended Posts

I am sure this topic has been discussed a bit, but for the record here is what I am going to do and you all can tell me if you agree or not. Maybe you were planning to do the same thing? I have outlined my thought process below:

****

We are all faced with a decision in the next year. Which of the three consoles to buy? I was leaning towards PS3 on account of the great racing games they will undoubtedly have. However, I have have since changed my mind.

1. I know some people like love their XBOX's and that is fine. Personally I hate the damn controller and won't buy one because of it.

2. Sony now has the biggest fan base, so it is hard to imagine going wrong with a PS3. Several great looking titles will be available at or just after launch.

3. Nintendo has lost a ton of market share but still makes a fun game and a reliable system. There are many Nintendo exclusive titles, that for me, are must haves. Unlike they others, no Nintendo titles will be out on PC.

So what I am going to do? Well, to start with I am getting the Nintendo. the $199 price tag is very attractive compared to Sony and Microsoft, and Nintendo will surely have some fun games to play at launch as well. 12-18 months later I will probably pick-up a PS3. By then PS3 will have gone down in price and have a great library, some of which will also have gone down in price. The controller looks a little funky, but Nintendo has never made a controller I didn't like. So on that, I am willing to trust them.

So which way are you going?

It's very hard to turn away from any of them because thay all sound good but we have no idea what we're getting until it comes.

I will almost certainly buy the Xbox360 because it's first and because I know I love the controller.

I may buy the PS3 and/or the revolution, but I will wait and see how they compare to the 360 once they are released. That Nintendo controller looks very interesting, but not very ergonomic, which must surely be the most important thing in a games system.

If I do buy one or both then I will like sell off the weaker consoles and keep the one I like the most, whichever that may be.

I'm going with the Revolution. It's definitely the lesser of three evils, and (reportedly) the cheapest of the three, too. It may not be as powerful as the PS3 or even the XBox360, but how much more photorealistic can games GET? If it lags behind the other systems in visual performance, only the pickiest of gamers are going to notice.

I'm leaning towards the Revolution, it looks to be the only system that gives me a significant gameplay difference than what I've experienced over the past 10 years or so.

I don't give a D about graphics it's all the in the gameplay, so I'm going for the Revolution...

I only bought an Xbox for ONE game only which ended up being released on PC, so the Xbox was a total Dud for me, so there is NO way I'm buying an Xbox 360...

Most PS2 games are full of angtsy, "Xtreme" games, I just can get myself to buy a PS2 game, but the PS3 might be an option...

Probably not getting any of the new systems. I'll be picking up one of the old systems as I'm sure the price will go down. It'll probably be several years before I pickup something new, if I ever do.

I have pretty mcuh ruled out buying a 360 anywhere close to launch. And a few of the ps3 games i ahve seen are pretty impressive (war hawks comes to mind). But as far as buying a system at launch it's the revolution all the way.

I hope nintendo gets more third party games, but if they don't I'm sure i can deal with it. Really i couldn't imagine not having my cube, my x box on the other hand i never play, and when i do it is pretty much only for star wars games. So my desire to buy a 360 is pretty much just not there. I think the ps3 has a lot of potential though being the strongest of the three. So what i think i will do is just get a rev to start enjoy the hell out of it. Then when the ps3 drops in price and has some games i really want i will pick that up as well.

Well, the Revolution is almost certainly going to be A LOT cheaper than the other two so you don't have to settle for one console in the next round.

So, the question of which console I have AS WELL as the Revolution :-

I think the 360. Far more developer friendly, M$ seem to have a better attitude towards smaller scale developers, PS3 has BluRay which I think is going to go the way of betamax, the PS2 really left me cold as far as games went and, just from an aesthetic point of view, it'd be rude NOT to buy the only US designed piece of hardware that hasn't looked like ass - I mean, heck, it looks like Apple made it!

I'll buy a Revolution at launch but won't be in much of a hurry to get the 360 though. The first gen. games for this don't look really much more impressive than the last gen. Xbox titles.

I agree on both counts. The Revolution will be one of my systems and the xbox will be the other. I think going with BluRay on a new system to try to force it on the market will end up being a mistake.

For me, the decision to get a 360 has become a no-brainer. MS has shown me what to expect, MS will stay commited to the 360, and most importantly, they have not gone on and on about the system only being perfect with no drawbacks. Just last week, Allard and Moore both talk about the shortcomings with DVD storage capacity, developers not fully understanding the system with such short time to make games, the Marketplace will be mostly crap, and the hard drive still a concern with not only most developers, but with MS itself. I like knowing what I am getting into. I know Live will continue to be an awesome community, and I know that just like with the original Xbox, they will bend over backwards to get me games and I know in 6 weeks, I will be playing my 360. MS destroys both Sony and Nintendo in regards to respect for the industry and not sugarcoating their product. I also applaud MS for confidence and not arrogance when speaking of Sony and Nintendo.

Sony, I may have finally figured out. I beleive that they are more intent on showing what you can expect towards the end of the PS3's lifespan, best case scenario all the way. They have nothing stated about online at all yet, no game footage that I can beleive is what I will play the day it's released. I will probably get one IF the system can do all it's promised, with games oddly enough becoming my second reason to getting one. I know there will be good games, so my decision will be based on system capabilities. Sony's arrogance is a turn off to me. Show me, don't talk a good game.

Nintendo. I am still doubtful I will get a Revolution. Again, I have seen nothing, just heard talk. After being very disappointed in both the N64 and GameCube, I seem to have a hard time throwing my cash at their consoles. 2 systems of talk, and very little on delivering, I optimistically would say I hope it changes, but realistically I kinda know it won't be a system for me. Here again, I can't stand the arrogance. Back up the talk, which they have failed to do for 8 or so years now, and maybe I can get intersted.

I guess it all comes down to the total experience I am buying and in the long run, I have all my confidence in MS, a little less in Sony, and very little at all in Nintendo.

A few games for the 360 make me want it pretty bad, like Dead Rising. But the PS3 has some of those games coming for it too. I don't have the cash to buy the 360 next month otherwise I would. The most realistic thing for me is to get a PS3 with Metal Gear Solid 4 or Devil May Cry 4 by saving up money for about five or six months. As for the Revolution I haven't seen anything, so I will see about that.

360, I have it pre-ordered. The main reason? Project Gotham 3. Plus the fact that I've found the Xbox to be my most played console over the past few years above the PS2/GC, thanks to Live and a pretty big selection of appealing games.

Having said that, I know there will be PS3/Rev exclusive games that will tempt me to eventually own all three.

I love the Xbox controllers more than any controllers I have ever used so far. I'm getting a 360 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as soon as I can afford them. It might take until the year 2525, but I will own them both.

I'm sure there are other games that I will like, but The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is at the top of my list because "Oblivion features a groundbreaking new AI system, called Radiant AI, which gives non-player characters (NPCs) the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. They'll decide where to eat or who to talk to and what they'll say. They'll sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. Full facial animations and lip-synching, combined with full speech for all dialog, allows NPCs to come to life like never before."

The 360, yet it has traits of European styling. Controllers are a bit clunky though.

As of right now, I think my first next-gen system will be the Revolution roughly when it launches. From there, I'll probably do a PS3 later in the year or maybe the following year even. I love my DS and it has brought me back into the Nintendo fold.

By the time the Revolution launches, I'll already have the DS online, and the same wireless dongle for the DS will work on the Revo, so that's a nice bonus too.

For me, it's all about the controller. All we've seen from the new systems are the same games with better graphics, I want something new so I'm going to go with Nintendo this round, at least to start. Of course, I say that's my plans for right now, as so little is known about the launch/games/price of the Revo and the PS3 right now.

I have no plans for the 360.

It's funny you should say that, one of the biggest reasons i don't care if i get a 360 is the fact the this gen most games the came out for x box came out for ps2. I see no reason for this to change next gen, and since this time around sony will have the stronger console x box will really have to kick up the exclusives. And more importantly keep them exclusive.

Having bought most of the consoles with in a year of launch (Santa gave the VCS), I can confidently say "We'll be sitting this one out"

Sure I'll probably end up with all 3 systems, but for now having all 3 current, plus all the older systems, a PSP, a few SPs is quite enough gaming to go around. Plus, I'm just not ready to "move forward" yet. I'm not so certain the next consoles will offer me something more than just prettier graphics, at least not in the first year or so.

We're also due for a new PC and there's quite a few up and coming games I'd like to play..

Yeah - us too. I think we're going to get my wife a laptop with tax refunds this year, which may cause a delay in our console purchase, depending on the sales at the time and the price of the Revolution. I'll miss the laptop, but it would be nice to have the desktop PC all to myself :D

Excellent point! I hadn't really thought about it that way before. The vast majority of the games I own for the Xbox were also released for the PS2. I bought them on Xbox over PS2 simply because the Xbox is more powerful. I always buy a multi-platform release on the most powerful system.

Although, with that said, I wouldn't want to be without the Sega exclusives like House of the Dead 3, Panzer Dragoon Orta, etc. I'd also miss Doom 3 and the Dead or Alive series. However, that's not a very big list of exclusives. If Microsoft had to rely on first-party titles alone like Nintendo mostly does, the Xbox would be an abysmal failure. If this were the case, Microsoft would be best off calling their system the Halobox.

Well the revolution will give you a new way to play that's for sure. You just have to ask yourself if you want to play that way.

Although, with that said, I wouldn't want to be without the Sega exclusives like House of the Dead 3, Panzer Dragoon Orta, etc. I'd also miss Doom 3 and the Dead or Alive series. However, that's not a very big list of exclusives

I bought my x box for the same reasons minus doom 3 and DOA and add metal slug 3 and kung fu caos. But given the revolutions unique contoller and it's ability to be used as a light gun we might just see some hotd or otehr sega light gun games on the revolution some day. And can you imagine how awesome a panzer dragoon would be?

But I'm getting side tracked, a lot of the 360 games at launch are either sequels or games you can buy on any of the systems. And sure they look impressive now but i think you can pretty much guarentee the ps3 will do just about everything better. Except online of course, most developers liked the x box because it was stronger than the ps2 and had a bigger fan base than the cube, plus it had a huge online community. The boxes fan base continues to grow but it doesn't do anything better than the other systems now. Both systems will have equal or better graphics and the ps3 fan base still dwarfs the boxes and sony would be foolish to not move ahead with the ps3 online play at full steam.

Even nintendo learned what a mistake not having online was this gen and is making big plans for the DS and revolution to go online. And if the specs are to be believed it will be as strong as the 360 give or take. Plus it adds a new way of playing games the 360 (and ps3) can't give. So x box will have a long up hill struggle next gen. That's how i see it anyway other will see it anotehr way of course.

I'm looking at buying a Jaguar.

I sold mine recently, I found most of the games to be dull.

As for next gen consoles, I haven't decided I'm buying one at all. The 360 and PS3 look to be more of the same with better graphics which I don't care about so they aren't really contenders for my money. The Revolution has the promise of downloaded classics as well as the funky control scheme which appeals a lot more to me but I'm not set on buying it yet. Maybe after the first price drop.

360 on launch day - I have all three of the current systems, but the Xbox is far and away the most used. And someone I personally know has had a chance to play with some of the launch titles, and said the hype is definitely deserved.

The PS3 will have to have some kickass exclusives to sway me to buy one... I have no interest in Japanese RPGs or Metal Gear Solid, so the PS2 fell rather flat with me. The REvolution all depends on if they can offer a more "standard" control scheme than what has been demonstrated, and how the back catalog is handled. And if Nintendo can come up with something other than more Mario and Zelda titles.
