Which arcade classics are being re-released?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to know: what re-releases of classic games have you seen at the arcades? I can only remember seeing about three, and I gather from the Charles Cheese thread that there's at least one more. What else?

Known by dogcorn:

Galaga/Ms Pacman (plus regular Pacman as an easter egg)

Namco Pacman/Digdug/a couple others I don't remember

Capcom's "roulette wheel" collection with about 30 different games

Donkey Kong/Jr/Mario Bros

I've never seen one yet, but I think Taito released a Space Invaders/Qix combo a couple years ago. It looks like a Space Invaders cabinet with some Qix graphics on it, as well.

They didn't make it to the U.S., but Namco released Namco Classics Collection Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 to Japanese arcades. The first collection had Galaga, Mappy and Xevious, while the second collection sported Pac-Man, Rally-X and Dig-Dug. These cabinets also featured the "arrangement" versions of those games, some of which would later appear in various NamcoMuseum releases for the current generation of game consoles.

Does anyone know what the guts are inside of these things?

I know that the earlier rereleases were based on System 11 (Playstation) hardware, right?

For things like the Ms Pacman/Galaga 20th anniversary reunion what do they put in there? Is it basically like a MAME cabinet?

No, ms pac/galaga is similar to the original hardware although reimplimented with modern components.

Konami did '80's gallery a while back, japan only I think also, although a friend of mine imported a bunch of them for resell: Gyruss, Time Pilot, Super Cobra, Scramble, Pooyan, Roc'n Rope, Yie Ar KUNG FU, Shao-Lin's Road, Circus Charlie, Road Fighter

It would be nice to see the likes of Scramble and Super Cobra back in the arcades in the UK but as yet none have been resurrected on these far shores :(

Huh, I played one of those myself, but I guess someone imported it. I liked the new versions of Rally X and Pac-Man on Vol. 2, those were pretty good :D

You mean like a Flashback 2 where it's all reduced down to a new chip?

No, it's not near as bad as that, they've just reduced the number considerably. Iirc the cpu's are still seperate as are the roms.

Well, from what I've seen it's basically the same code on the ROMs for the cabinet, but in the case of the Class of 1981 machines, they also added the original Pac-Man code to replace Ms. Pac-Man on the credit screen when a code was entered each time.
