"The Family Version Of The Arcade Game"

Recommended Posts

Remember, in the early 80s, MB released 'family versions' (board games) of the hottest coin-ops of the day? Well, I'm in the process of getting them all and I just wanted to check with everyone's memory that this list is exhaustive.

Right, I have:-

Pacman

Frogger

Berzerk

Zaxxon

Turbo

Defender

Donkey Kong

and I'll soon be in possession of Centipede.

Anyone know if there were any more? They don't have to be necessarily by MB, I'm just keen on collecting, in full, every example of this curious spin-off of early videogaming.

thanks :)

There are many, many more. There's a few dozen, actually. I personally know of Q*Bert and Ms. Pac-Man. I'm sure a Google search will turn up the rest of them.

There was a Cloak & Dagger game (not sure if it was based on the movie or the arcade game). I also think there may have been a Last Starfighter game.

Q*Bert was Parker Brothers.

I had the Zaxxon game. It was pretty fun!

I was impressed how close they got to the game mechanics with some of those titles. Donkey Kong in particular. It has the hammer, the fireballs and, when you press down Kong's paw, he drops a little plastic barrell. Very clever.

Defender kinda loses something in the translation. They didn't quite capture the element of speed :)

Great topic.

EDIT: I made a webpage with a collection of pics of these games: http://www27.brinkster.com/mookieghana/nes/vintage.htm

Also, check out this list that was complied: http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/cvg/nexus/...oardgames.shtml

It mentions games that I missed such as Pitfall, Pooyan, Turtles, Wizard of Wor and Joust!
