Anyone manage to get a Generation Nex early?

Recommended Posts

For those that made really early preorders did your Generation Nex shipped yet or do you have it right now. If so whats it like? I might get a Generation Nex or a real NES.

Yes, has anyone got it yet? I'm looking forward to see if it is fully compatible with everything or if its just another NOAC like the famiclones.

Q: Is the Generation NEX a clone (NOAC) or does it have all of the components of an actual NES inside?

A: NEX is a clone and cannot use the actual NES IC because it is not licensed by Nintendo. (see next)

Q: Does it contain custom ICs, or is it based around the NOAC [NES-on-a-chip] that most "clone" consoles are based around?

A: Our IC is a custom designed IC that is built on the NES algorithm. Every attention to detail has been spent on compatibility.

Clear as mud, eh? I guess we need to wait.

Well considering that the first 250 pre-orders have shipped just this week I don't think anyone has recieved them yet. I pre-ordered mine on the May 24th so I'll post when I get mine.

It's fairly clear, actually.

1. Yes, they're a FamiClone.

2. They custom-designed their own chipset instead of using the same chip as everyone else. Allegedly with a focus on precision simulation of the original hardware.

So while they ARE a FamiClone, they're NOT the NESon-a-chip clones that've recieved so much bad press.

Sounds good. If its fully compatible with everything, I'll pick one up. If not, then I'm sticking to my OC'ed NES.

He means overclocked NES.  Yes, people are so hardcore about overclocking they'll even overclock the old-school stuff. :D

You think that's hardcore?

Man, I overclocked my CLOCK! It can cover an hour in 37 minutes!

I've heard rumors from a (supposedly) informed source that leads me to believe that the compatibility will be disapointing. I have no way to verify this and I'm still not entirely sure whether to trust the rumor or not, so we'll have to just wait and see.... but until this thing gets a clean bill of health, I can't possibly justify spending $60 on it when other famiclones (with more or less the same compatibility) are available at half the price. I would pay $60 for a fully compatible clone, but the style alone isn't worth the extra money to me. I really want to replace my unreliable, beat-up front-loader too.

The people making this are pretty knowledgable people, so it seems reasonable to me to assume that they know full well how (in)compatible their machine is. Not giving any details on this in the FAQ seems a little... well... shady I guess. I don't expect them to list off every single NES game, but if there are popular games that are known not to work (Castlevania 3 seems a likely candidate, as many famiclones apparently have trouble with it), then they really should mention it to potential customers.
