V-tech/V-Smile questions

Recommended Posts

I know this console is for kids and I don't want to buy it or anything but I keep seeing commercials for it as well as the "pocket" version. I guess kids have really big pockets from the looks of it but whatever. Anyway, I'm curious, what's under the hood on this thing? It sort of looks like a mutated N64 and it has pretty good graphics. I can't seem to find any info on it's specs. Anybody know anything about this thing?

We got one for my boys last Christmas. It isn't too bad, but ours tends to be flakey when using the AC adapter in that it sometimes just won't turn on and I have to unplug it and plug it back in.

One thing is that some of the carts are difficult to pull out of the thing. My boys always have to get help when wanting to change games.

As for specs, I don't know, but the games look to be about Genesis/Amiga quality in that they aren't quite 256 colors at once, but really close. The music is FM Synthesis so again, it reminds me of a Genesis in that regard. But the speech in many of the games is far superior to any you heard in either the Genesis or SNES back in the day. The games are all very small content wise and very easy to play of course. My boys actually like theirs a lot. Especially the Care Bears, and Mickey Mouse one.

I have to give them credit...I totally dismissed this as a Pico ripoff that would only last one holiday season, but the fact they have made a handheld version that actually takes the same cartridges as the normal tv machine really impresses me.

I find it hilarious that they call the software "smartridges"

What got me wondering about it was the handheld commercials. If this could be easily hacked and had some decent specs, who know what folks could do with it.
