Badlands / Sprint steering wheel restore?

Recommended Posts

My Badlands has had two nastily spray painted steering wheels for a while now, and I finally decided to do something about it. I took them off and stripped all the nasty paint layers away. Now I'm left with two mostly shiny wheels that have some light surface rust and pitting on them. Anyone know what to do next so that I can keep the nice chrome look while getting rid of the remaining rust and preventing it from coming back?

I'm going to remove the mounting plate and housings for the wheels themselves and strip and clean them up as well, and they'll just need a nice coat of black paint afterwards, but I'm sort of at a loss as to what to do with the wheels.

Go to the auto parts store and get some Mothers Chrome polish. Then wax them with auto wax and you are good to go. If you have more surface rust than the polish can lift off, I use 0000 steel wool with the polish. Old Harley trick. Works everytime!

Cool, thanks. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the wheel housings. I pulled the optical encoders from them because I know I'd ruin them with dust from the cleaning. I wish I could figure out how to remove the whole main shaft and optical encoding wheel - they're assembled in a way that looks like you could never get them out.

I think I'm going to have to settle for sealing the bottoms with duct tape and go from there.

Go to the auto parts store and ...

I thought for sure this was going to end with, "...pick up some steering wheel slip-on covers."
