Really bad Genesis games

Recommended Posts

A new friend I made here via the boards, was telling me how he just got his very first RPG for his Genesis. When I though about another RPG I actually once owned Super Hylide which is possibly the worst game ever made for the Genesis. Then I though what other horrible games lay out there for the unexpection collector to buy by accident

Out Run 2019 was lackluster, in my opinion. I bought it new, played it, then returned it the next day, back when you could still do that sort of thing.

It baffles me that they've released it as a single-game dedicated console.

the gameplay was too sluggish for me as well as stiff especially for all the action that goes on screen.

It is today, the controls are very stiff and the animation is weak. However back in the day™ it was amazing. I actually bought a Genesis back then just so I could play Altered Beast (that and Toe Jam and Earl). AB isn't a bad game, it just hasn't aged well.

There are a lot of very bad games, mainly the unknown action games that you've never heard of. Also, most of the flight sim games and war games are absolute rubbish. MiG-29 and Steel Talons come to mind. The Genesis port of Steel Talons is horrible.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the "Action 52" cart!!!

Yes, I own one, luckily I didn't buy it new. I got it for about $6 at a used game shop a few years back. I bought it because of its rarity and not because of the "fun" factor...ugh. I think there are only a few games on that cart that are even playable, but they escape me at the moment. The Chester Cheetah games ain't great either.

The good news, is that the Genesis still has an excellent good to bad factor when it comes to games.

My answer to this question will always and forevermore be "Dark Castle."

I had the great misfortune of playing this in the early 1990's. It was a cult favorite on the Macintosh, leading me to wonder just what the hell happened when it was converted to the Genesis. Tiny characters, ugly backgrounds, and some of the worst control this side of a broken joystick make this the worst game ever released by Electronic Arts.

In case you actually want a more detailed description of Dark Castle, well, imagine playing Donkey Kong. Now, imagine that an eight hundred pound demon is sitting on your back, choking you with one clawed hand while jabbing a sharpened spear into your rectum with the other. That's the Dark Castle experience.

I also bought a Genesis just so I could play Altered Beast (and Golden Axe, two games I played often in the arcades). The Genesis version of Altered Beast even has something over the arcade version (something I never noticed in the arcade but recently in MAME): parallax scrolling! :-o :P

As for bad Genesis games...hmm. I can't really think of any so I'll just go with my least favorite in my collection: Exile. The side-scrolling action scenes are garbage. Cheap hits and poor animation galore.

As for Super Hydlide, I own it but don't feel it's a bad game. It has its issues and is far from perfect, of course, but I liked its time and weight system. My least favorite aspects of it were the busy backgrounds and poor sound effects. That reminds me, I still have to beat the last boss :ponder:.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Dark Castle. I remember when EA had a "buy 2 get 1 free" deal in the early 90s. I picked up Starflight and Dark Castle (got The Immortal for free, yay!). I actually returned Dark Castle it was so unplayable (ahh, the days when you could return games). I'm sure I mentioned this in another thread but just to reiterate: this game was meant to be played with a mouse (it was originally a Mac game). Using a control pad for this game is right out. You might as well stare out the window with control pad in hand and pretend like you're controlling the people on the sidewalks. Sure, their actions may coincide with your controller, but don't bet on it.

Batman Joker's Revenge. I own it because I am a Batman fan and that is it! The worst batman game ever made until Batman Dark Tomorrow for XB and GC!

Stargate Sucked as well!

Toe Jam and Earl is pretty bad. I can second Altered Beast as well. Very sluggish.

I guess I don't really know, because even though I had a genesis in the early nineties, I only got good games for it! (Sonic 1 and 2, Ecco, NBA Jam, Street Fighter 2, Lethal Enforcers, Castlevania Bloodlines, Aladdin).

Any of the FMV Sega CD Titles. Awful, awful games.

Most of the Acclaim titles were really bad.

Time Killers is hideously bad, but you have to consider the source. The "Arcade Classics" with Centipede, Missle Command and Pong is pretty bad too.

Heavy Nova, like was mentioned before, was a total stinkbomb. Control was terrible, and the game was so painfully uninteresting that it couldn't hold my attention for more than five minutes.

Being a huge Rastan fan, I picked up Rastan II and was extremely disappointed. In truth, it probably wasn't the worst game ever, but it sure was disappointing. I would also throw in a vote for Atomic Robo Kid. Don't remember much about the game other than wishing I hadn't bought it.

Altered Beast hasn't aged well, but I sure loved it back then (both the SMS and Genny versions, actually). I don't think the game is that bad. It has limited depth, but the controls are fairly tight, the graphics and art direciton are excellent, and it's reasonably fun for what it is.

Wasn't the Mortal Kombat series made by Acclaim? They were/are pretty good.

There is an interesting thing about the Genesis - with most games, you are able to turn on the console and start playing. While it may help to know spefifically how the controller works or what your objective is, it isn't necessary - not really.

That is one of the great things about the "Old School" games (for me, it the 2600 and Genny). being able to plug'n'play without having to study a 150-page manual that costs $15 and takes three weeks to learn, as is the case with many of today's games.

My latest addition to the AWFUL GENESIS game list is BULLS versus BLAZERS.:razz:

I got this game free (thank G-d!) with the purchase of Robocop 3 (which frankly, I didn't care too much for either on the initial attempts). I'd like to share with you the review for this game by the Video Game Critic (www.gamerankings.com). It is hilarious - Frankly, I'm surprised he gave it a D+!!

Bulls Vs. Blazers (Electronic Arts 1993) D+

4/19/2005

I'll never forget how disappointed I was when I bought this game. My friend Eric was with me when I traded in my old Bulls vs. Lakers game (at the local trade-in store) and proceeded to buy Bulls vs. Blazers at Toys 'R Us for some exorbitant amount ($70 if I recall). When we got back to my house and fired it up, we were mortified to discover that it was practically identical to Bulls vs. Lakers! Heck, even the intro music is the same! The back of the box should have tipped me off. Instead of listing "new features", it lists "key" features, most of which are included in the previous edition. The few new features are negligible. Basically, you can adjust your "press" and "steal aggressiveness", and create custom all-star teams. Big deal. Actually I do remember Eric and I using this "create team" feature. He created a five-man team of short Mark Prices, and I stocked mine with a bunch of tall Patrick Ewing clones. His little white guys were running circles around my lumbering giants, and I took quite a beating. At its core, Bulls Vs. Blazers uses the same lethargic engine as its predecessors, and the best players are unstoppable once they find their "spot" on the floor. Charles Barkley's signature slam is performed at the foul line with no running start, and it's not unusual for him to pass through several defenders on the way up. EA was clearly content to pump out rehashes in the early 90's (imagine that). I eventually sold Bulls vs. Blazers to my friend Tuan for $17 :dunce:(after getting NBA Jam), and I still remember him calling me up and complaining about how incredibly slow it was.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Last Battle. That alone has to rank as one of the most boring side scrolling beat em ups ever released. Looking back on it Rings of Power is just too frustrating to be true even though I used to play it for hours on end when I first got it ;)

You didn't like Toe Jam and Earl? Did you ever play it with two players? It's a really SLOW game with only one player, but with two it's a blast.
