silverpoodleman #1 Posted October 31, 2005 I have the opportunity to grab a copy of a genesis game that is at the top of my want list, however, it is for sale in the UK only and comes in PAL format. How would that work with my NTSC console - or wouldn't it? I apologize if this answer has been asked 80 times already. I searched but couldn't find a Genesis PAL thread. How would that work with my NTSC console - or wouldn't it? I apologize if this answer has been asked 80 times already. I searched but couldn't find a Genesis PAL thread. 957217[/snapback] It won't work as-is. I don't know if you can just flip the region jumper on a Genesis for PAL gaming, or if you have to boot in 50Hz too...
silverpoodleman #3 Posted November 1, 2005 fudge - in that case, how hard is it to track down a PAL genesis console in the states?
JB #4 Posted November 1, 2005 No clue. Not very hard to add region switches, though. 'S just a pair of jumpers on tbe motherboard.
chrisbid #5 Posted November 1, 2005 i have 2 PAL games (columns and 94 winter games) and they work just fine i also found a PAL pirate genesis system, the screen rolls if you play an NTSC game on it
+-^CrossBow^- #6 Posted November 1, 2005 I don't know that Genesis games are specifically coded to be PAL or NTSC. I think the console detemines this. I only say this, because more than once I have found MegaDrive labeled games here in Tulsa GameXchange's and Vintage Stocks. So, I have to assume that the games worked for their previous owners. My suspicion is that the Genesis itself does the HZ change and the jumpers are only to tell the Genesis which region code to look for in the games. But this only applies to later generation Model 1 units and all model 2 Genesis units. I have personally seen people use a gamegenie to play a Japanese MegaDrive cart so they didn't have to put a hacksaw to their Genesis consoles.
sigma #7 Posted November 1, 2005 No, I don't have any questions concerning PAl games on the Genesis. Thanks for asking though.
anagrama #8 Posted November 2, 2005 (edited) What game is it? All first-party games pre-mid '93 are region-free, while most later ones are region-locked. 3rd Party games are a lot more hit & miss. Oh, and there's no such thing as a PAL Genesis. It's called a MegaDrive everywhere in the world except the US.
