silverpoodleman #1 Posted November 3, 2005 (edited) I received some Genesis game carts in the mail today. They were purchased on ebay and they reek of tobacco smoke. Does anyone know how I get this awful smell out? Edited November 4, 2005 by silverpoodleman
Famicoman #2 Posted November 3, 2005 Alcohol? It kills bacteria, which causes odor.
phaxda #3 Posted November 3, 2005 I usually go with Febreze and lots of time in the basement--I have a nice little quarantine area set up down there for such items (and I am amazed at how many things from eBay just reek). I spray Febreze in the area every so often, and eventually the smell does go away. Sucks if it's something you want to use right away, though...I had a TurboGraphx that I was really looking forward to, but it smelled like it had a pack-a-day habit and stunk up my office so bad that I had to exile it for about a month. JB #4 Posted November 3, 2005 Alcohol? It kills bacteria, which causes odor. 959615[/snapback] Only some oders. Cigarette smell isn't from bacteria. On the other hand, alcoholo also makes a good cleaner. It'd pr'ly break the smoke deposits up pretty well. Once those are gone, the smell should leave with them. +-^CrossBow^- #5 Posted November 3, 2005 Except what about the smoke particles hiding inside the cart shell? See, the only way I can get smoke smell out of my carts is to basically sit them out in the garage for awhile. Course then they might just smell of oil and gas...hehe. Febreeze is probably the best idea. But I haven't used that stuff myself so I can't comment. Now when a console I receive smells of smoke, I gut it open and clean all the components with a nice bath of tuner cleaner. I then follow this up with another electronics cleaner with a brush on the end and that seems to get rid of it 100%. I clean the cart shells with windex or 409 (Best), and then follow with a light scrub down and buff using De-Solv-It. You won't have any smoke smell after that...hehe. joeybastard #6 Posted November 3, 2005 Put them in a enclosed box with a bowl of white vinegar for a few days. They smell will be gone.
+remowilliams #7 Posted November 3, 2005 (edited) I use RAM to clean whatever can possibly be cleaned without ruining it (which is most stuff, even cardboard sometimes). You can see the nicotine come off in one nasty swipe. And RAM has a nice citrus smell as well. Then I'll leave whatever it is by a fan for a while. Get's rid of it pretty well. Manuals, etc. I'll put on a hanger so they hang open by the fan. Smoking is the nastiest filthy habit. Yuck. Albert #10 Posted November 3, 2005 Yeah, it's really disappointing to open a package and find that it simply reeks of cigarette smell. My first instinct is to put the games (or whatever it is) in the washing machine with a gallon of bleach, but obviously that's not always an option. Sitting the items outside (such as on a patio) for a few days seems to help as long as there is some air flow. Also, cleaning whatever surfaces of the item you can also helps, and yes, you can often clearly see the smokey grime come off when you do so. Blech. ..Al
