Spending Time With Checkered Flag...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

With all this talk of Checkered Flag being the worst game on the Jag, I decided to spend some quality time with it and see if it was really as horrible and offensive as I had always thought.

Long story-short, I no longer think this is the worst game on the Jag. I found that by changing the tire type to "Wet" and driving around in gear 2 or 3 on "Manual". I actually got some MILD enjoyment from this game. Almost bearable. Make sure to switch up the track from the default.

Another thing that some of you may not know about is the "Dark" code which allows you to drive around in near-pitch black and apparently increases the frame rate somewhat. Maybe they thought they could pitch Atari "Night Driver 2000"?

Code can be found Here

Anybody have ANY other cheats for this?

Also, if you want to increase the frame rate, you can also add fog. The funny thing here is that the game ends up looking like a N64 game, the problem with a higher frame rate though is the controls are still screwed up. This game "Could've been", but "Wasn't".

I think this could have worked as a simple vehicle combat game ala' RoadBlasters. The engine's not totally horrible.

After playing WTR for a while (which I like), and then playing CF, my first reaction is; wow! these graphics look sharp!

During the early (import) years of the Atari Jaguar (waaaaaay before findind an on-line community, ebay and others) the only 6 games i had here in Australia were being re-played over and over and over again (AvP, Checkered Flag, Cybermorph, Iron Soldier, Kasumi Ninja & Tempest 2000)! I had these 6 games for about 3 years so i got to play them a LOT! While the steering is VERY sensitive (bordering insanity-inducing), once you get enough practice it doesn't really bother you that much. My friends and i used to compete against each other to see who would get the best track-record times (THANK GOD for the EPROM SAVE!) and it was quite challenging as well as fun. On the other hand, now that i have almost every released Jag game (need 10 CIB carts & 1 CIB CD) i don't really play Checkered Flag that often! :P

Although it didn't take me six years to get more than half a dozen games for the Jaguar, CF was also one of my first games, and I too got good at controlling it. It WAS a disappointment to me as a game, but I've certainly played worse racers on other systems through the years. I do still play it on occasion too, i love the music and the "look" of the virtua-style graphics, and I do generally use all the "tricks" like Fog or night racing as well as the most distant camera and less A.I. cars on the track to get the best frame-rate. After all, the A.I. does suck, so if you get rid of most or all the other cars and just play it for best times, it's not bad. Though I always dream of mixing WTR and CF together, with WTR's cars, control, and A.I. but with the rest of the graphics and music coming from CF. As far as the fram-rate of CF goes, although an optimized or entirely re-written game engine would be nice, if the source code was found, the mere removal of about half the polygons on-screen would do the trick and it would still have more polygons than Virtua Racing on the 32X, which has plenty of poly's.

Please explain, I am interested in getting WTR but if it looks worse than CF, I am not sure if I can stomach it :)

It doesn't exactly look worse, but different

The graphics are low resolution, but there is more on screen, like trees, billboards and so on, well you can find screenshots on the internet

If you like racing games, you will probably like this one, it has a driving soundtrack and some little hills and sharp corners, which makes for some nice rough racing

WTR is a GOOD game, get it! What I meant is that it is in a lower resolution (which does not hamper gameplay and doesn't look bad, just not as sharp looking as CF), it has less polygons and more sprites thrown in on the roadsides, but i like the "look" of CF better. WTR's frame rate is better than CF's, even at it's worst, and much faster&smoother on some tracks, it has two player split-screen, which does run about the same Frame-rate as CF, but since the controls of WTR are not only 100% better, but also user-adjustable, the low frame-rate in 2-player mode doesn't hamper a good time. But in the "grand scheme" of things, even when it was released, WTR was only an average(but fun!) racer compared to what else was available in '95/96. If all the best of WTR and all the best of CF were put into a single game, we'd have a winner. As it stands, we have an average game with a few drawbacks and a terrrible game with a few good points that don't make up for the bad, unfortunately.

I don't know, I really enjoyed WTR the few times I've gotten to play it. I find it more fun than most of the F-1 racers out there. I really want the game, I just wish that I had a store near me that sells Jaguar stuff. :(
