Genesis Question re: 6-Button Controller Games

Recommended Posts

No offense man but why don't you do the work yourself? It's not like the information is not out there. Google it, go to gamefaqs, use the search feature in these forums. I am sure you will find something.

Over 2,000 posts and you still just don't get it. A forum is where people gather and discuss like things. Questions are asked and questions are answered. Points are made, stories are told, interesting facts reveal themselves. What seems like a simple search-able question to some, might be an avenue for someone else to enlighten everyone on something never discussed before.

You got over 2,600 and still are lacking with your manners. Using the search button must be a very offensive proposition for you. Get that?

Are you saying I should use the AA search button to find a previous discussion on the topic of rudely sending someone off to google? or are you suggesting that I need to work on my google skills?

Here's a little secret chief, google doesn't always produce the most accurate information. Sometimes you actually find total misinformation. :-o

manners = kettle + black

What's the point in these videogame boards if not to ask videogame related questions? Wouldn't it be likely someone around here has the info and would be willing to share?

Does anyone have a list of games that require the 6-button controller on Sega Genesis? Are there any non-fighting games that use the 6-button controller?

965911[/snapback]

I'm certain that Shadow Squadron, Metal Head, and Virtua Racing Deluxe for the 32X are all non-fighting games that use it. I think the regular Virtua Racing cart for the Genesis has 6 button support.

Either Eternal Champions or Street Fighter II: Champion Edition was the first to make use of it. After that, a lot of games supported it.

Probably the offtopic meta-discussion about asking these kinds of questions and the resulting flames should be kept to PMs rather than posted in the thread.

And, yes, I appreciate the irony...

Well, requiring the 6-button controller and just using the 6-button controller are very different things. I may be wrong, but I don't think there are any games that can't be played with the 3-button controllers, although there are many that will really suck if that's all you have (Mostly fighters though).

The Lost Vikings is another non-fighter that makes good use of the extra buttons. I've only ever played it on my Nomad, so I'm not sure how that one would even cope with only 3 buttons.

Comix Zone and Ranger X used the 6-button pad, to add to the list.

Like Ze_ro said, everything supports the 3-button pad, but a lot of stuff sucks with it.

You got over 2,600 and still are lacking with your manners.

Oh, the hypocrisy.

If I'm not mistaken, Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits makes use of the six-button controller for a more faithful control of Defender and Stargate, I mean, Defender II.

I believe it's correct to say that nothing absolutely required the 6-button controller, though, at least nothing I've ever played.

On a related note: The last 2 times I was in EB they had 6 button Genny pads for $2.99. I thought this was weird because prior to seeing these, I haven't seen anything Genny related in an EB in YEARS. I picked up 2 :D

I guess it is time for the author of the original post to chime in regarding this extremely controversial question/topic/thread.

Mr. Dones, why do you visit this forum? If one of the many answers I'm sure you have is to obtain information, guess what? That is what I was doing when posting this topic.

Since I joined this elite group of retro gamers on this web page, I have made several good friends (hey there Classic Pac!) and numerous people who regularly respond to my topics no matter how stupid the question. As a result of their interest in helping a dedicated fellow retro gamer, I have learned an incredible amount of information about these games, their place history, their place in my life and why people like me keep embracing the past.

I have also found out that most of the people apply first hand knowledge to their responses. They provide the texture, not just the cold, hard facts that one would get by simply going to google. The people here are experts and share the same passion I have. The information they give is generally right on, leads to smarter purchasing and better gaming. I can't get that on Google.

So that is why I'd rather ask the question here rather than just googling it and also why I visit this site daily.

To me, it sounds like you need to re-evaluate why you visit this forum. Clearly, you have anger issues or at the very least, no tolerance for people who do not do things the way you would. Clearly, you need to get your opinion heard no matter what - otherwise, you would have simply read the email, thought me an idiot for asking and not responded. However, since you responded as you did, this thread now contains issues unrelated to the original question. You, my friend, skewed the theme of this topic and screwed up a very simple question. Thanks so much for putting a speed bump on the information highway! Next time, if you do not have anything to say that would enhance the topic, move to another topic, or better yet, go Google yourself.

This came up in another thread at some point, but there seems to be one or two 32X games that do in fact REQUIRE the 6-button pad, specficially because they use the MODE key for some in-game function. What they are I no longer remember.

Metal Head used mode. But it was just another camera angle, and a useless one at that. the game works with a 3-button pad.

I consider it more interesting as a demonstration that the 6-button's lone shoulder button could be used as a gameplay button, bringing the total button count up to an SNES-equivalent 8.

My Genesis 6 button controller doesn't have a shoulder button?

Is a Majesco Genesis 3 controller.

They pr'ly tucked it somewhere else. Check the location that'd be "select" on a Nintendo product.

Either way, it's labelled "mode".

I know for a fact that you can still change camera angles in Metal Head with a 3-button controller. But you have to do nasty things like hit "Start + Left" at the same time and such. Not fun.

Yeah. The game works with a 3-button pad.

The 6-button just had the camera controls mapped to dedicated buttons, for sanity's sake.

And since the had a spare button, they set the mode button up as a nifty-looking, but totally useless, mostly-side view. If I recall, this angle was inaccessable with a standard pad.

If anyone tells you that Street Fighter requires the 6-button controller, punch them in the face for they are liars. Sure, it's a lot freaking better, but not required. I can't believe how popular it is to say it's true.
