Street Fighter 2 inspired catch phrases...

Recommended Posts

....that are strangely enough still around in use today!

...I remember that SF2 was the first game in which the word "cheap" became a noun and verb all at once..you know, the guy who always kicked your ass cause he knew how to throw a fireball but you didn't?

CHEAP.

The dude who could always beat your sorry ass using only throws in close-quarters?

CHEAP.

Getting beaten by a whole family of Asian kids with reflexes like laser panthers?...or having one of them beat you into that last sliver of health in the second round only to walk away from the controls and let his less skilled friend play the round for him?....whereupon he then would return to destroy you for the third and final round?...or maybe, you didn't return the favour, beat him outright in two rounds, and having his gang of hoodlums find your ass outside the arcade afterwards and you, trying desperately (yet to no avail) to throw real-life fireballs, gets a dose of retribution?

...man, that word was said so many times since then I think it leached into other games, especially Doom and the other first person shooters of it's kind...describing any technique which required NO skill to accomplish...or maybe it did require skills, just that you weren't good enough to dodge it!

I seem to remember another word for 'cheap' back in the day, but can't pin it down...'cheese' maybe?...I dunno, can't recall.

Man, I'll still make folks laugh by busting out the odd, "HADOOOO-ken!" at the supper table!...or a good ol "soNIC BOOM!" in a well timed instance...church, for example. "Yoga FLAME" doesn't really make anybody smile cause everybody knew Dhalsim, with his stretchy limbs and goofy flames STILL SUCKED. Name any other character in that game who had cooler sounding powers on paper, but in the game....MEH! Flames?..Teleportation??!?!?...damn, even DISAPPEARING AND REAPPEARING couldn't help out Dhalsim from the eternal land of suck!

Plus, he was cheap.

Anybody else remember those days?

Yep, cheese. That word got tossed about (pardon the pun) a lot particularly if somebody was constantly winning with throwing attacks. In fact, Capcom themselves eventually picked up on that one. At least one of the Street Fighter games, an Alpha entry if I'm not mistaken, awards a cheese emblem for the round if it was won with an excess of throwing attacks.

On the other side of the pond, the Midway guys also had something to say about throwing cheese. There is a code for Mortal Kombat 3 that disables throws, and, on the other extreme, one that encourages throws.

You're just not playing him right.

I can rip apart quite a bit of people with Dhalsim.

...ha, I'm sure you could...I was waiting for a PRO Dhalsim to crawl from the woodwork!....truth be told you could, with amazing patience and quickness, learn to counter just about any attack with ol boringpants Dhalsim....but any good Ryu player would take him apart bangle by bangle!

Actually, the cheese wedge in the Alpha/Zero series now represents someone who managed to get a KO against someone who blocked your last special or super. Even in Alpha 3 when you got a KO against someone who blocked it would flash under the type of finishing move you won with "CHEAP!". Then again.. that's why the "guard-crush" system was made. To punish those who like to block.

Speaking of constant blocking, that's where the term "turtling" came from. Just get a few good hits in and block everything they use until "Time Over".
