Zwackery #2 Posted November 17, 2005 "Beekoz dey killed my muh-za, dey killed my fah-zah, dey killed my PEE-PULL!!! And den dey took my fah-zah's s-woord!" They did make some good quality, very sturdy boxes and labels that tend to stand the test of time (so far).

I agree they're not in the realm of Fire Fly (game #1 in the Fire Fly series!), but that's not saying a whole lot. I think the complaint is probably more that U.S. Games didn't really seem to have any inspiration. While it's true that even Imagic, Atari, and Activision produced a few dogs, all three of those companies also had some really good programmers. U.S. Games seems to have been one of the companies that just wanted to jump on the bandwagon, rather than one that wanted to do something noteworthy. video game addict #5 Posted November 17, 2005 Gopher & Entombed are decent. I've never played MAD. Maybe someday I'll fire it up.. I had thought Entombed would be something similar to Tutankham or Montezumas Revenge, but boy was I wrong. It's actually a race against time freefall game. Kind of like a long lost relative of Mr. Driller. It's not much to look at, but it's actually a pretty decent little game. If I didn't die so much I might actually say it was a good game. Some of these old games can be frustrating when they start off difficult. I think sometimes games are written off before they get a fair chance. Inky #6 Posted November 17, 2005 Apparently, if you search the forums, there's a lot of love on here for Entombed. Personally, I love Towering INferno.
adams_ale #7 Posted November 17, 2005 Well, like everyone else, I do like Entombed. There aren't any great games made by U.S Games/Vidtec. I've never played Gopher so I'll give that one a try sometime. Besides Gopher I've played all of their offerings and for the most part the games are okay. However, there are a few really awful games that have given U.S. Games a bad name: Picnic, Word Zapper, Sneak n' Peek, and Squeeze Box.
Christophero Sly #8 Posted November 17, 2005 Gopher is a great game. I also enjoy Eggomania. Entombed would be an all-time classic if you didn't stick to the walls.
+Random Terrain #9 Posted November 17, 2005 I wanted to like Towering Inferno because I love the idea of putting out fires like that, but something just isn't right.
Atariboy #10 Posted November 17, 2005 I like Word Zapper and Squeeze Box. Guess I'm the only one.

shadow460 #12 Posted November 17, 2005 Word Zapper is okayish, but there needs to be actual words on the harder rounds. Commando Raid and Entombed are must haves for 2600 owners. Commando Raid is not fully compatible with the 7800 because it uses the TV Type switch, but it's still fun on a 7800. I don't like Gopher. MAD is fun for a minute, too, as is Piece o' Cake. The rest leave something to be desired.
Atariboy #13 Posted November 17, 2005 MAD is fun as a 2 player game.
Foxsolo2000 #14 Posted November 17, 2005 Commando Raid was perhaps their best title. Gopher was very pretty to look at but very boring over a long period of time. M.A.D. was just a cheap and nasty looking version of Commando Raid and Sneak N Peek was more than a little pointless. Squeeze Box was again a decent game to look at but was aimed more at the junior players as was Word Zapper which should have been made harder with a penalty for shooting the wrong letters. Name that Game was a unique idea but it showed what most of their games were lacking, a polish that would have made them into great games such as Eggomania
RickHarrisMaine #15 Posted November 17, 2005 Commando Raid is only okay, and I could never figure out how the heck to actually play Towering Inferno, so by that alone, I don't like it. The best part of Atari games for the 2600 is that you really don't have to read the manual at all for most of them, which is good, because most of the games that are around now don't have them anyways
joeybastard #16 Posted November 17, 2005 Like most of the companies making games for the VCS they are hit and miss IMHO.I think Entombed is one of the best games on the VCS. I like Towering Inferno a lot too and enjoy the occaisonal game of Picnic. I actually like Raft Rider too but I bet most people don't
bcprs1 #17 Posted November 17, 2005 I wanted to like Towering Inferno also, but I found that the game gets very frustrating. If you are lucky to get to the top floor, it is almost impossible to beat. You have to make a run for it and hope you don't get a bad maze. The best I have done is get to the third building.
Lord Thag #18 Posted November 18, 2005 They made some good games. Entombed is quite fun, and so is commando raid and towering inferno. Back in the day, I was known to play Space Jockey for hours. Not so much anymore, though US games is kinda like Tigervision and Spectravision. Decent to good games without a lot of press that get lumped in with Apollo, Mithicon and Datage. Dr. Morbis #19 Posted November 18, 2005 I like US games because they gave the world Sneak 'N Peak, the most unintentionally funny game in all existence. I played the game with a friend once (emulated, sadly I can't find the cart to save my life) and the two of us just about died we were laughing so hard. Even the name is funny (to me). SteveW #20 Posted November 18, 2005 I played Space Jockey a lot back in the day, too. It's only 2K, so I wish that someone would expand the game to 8-16K and add new levels, power-ups, and bosses.
HP Atari King of Michigan #21 Posted November 18, 2005 US Games put out some decent titles compared to numberous third party companies that were out there. For me the only real turkey in the US Games/Vidtec library is Squeeze Box.
Lucky Man #22 Posted November 18, 2005 I have most of the games from U.S. Games and I like them too. I think they get a bad rap because a lot of the games were obviously geared towards kids, which is good if you have kids (or are one). I actually just picked up Squeeze Box. I really wanted to like it. The dancing devil at the end is particularly nice. But it's just too damn easy and pointless. Lucky Man
Flojomojo #23 Posted November 18, 2005 I like Word Zapper and Squeeze Box. Guess I'm the only one. 967104[/snapback] Maybe, but I like Word Zapper and Entombed, for what it's worth.
yuppicide #24 Posted November 19, 2005 I think I liked Entombed because I actually owned it back in the day.
Godzilla #25 Posted November 22, 2005 Entombed is still one of the greatest two player games I've ever played. Great co-op or great head to head. It's just up to you how you play it. Towering Inferno is great fun once you take the time to learn how to play it. However, Raft Rider is one of the worst games I've ever played. MAD & Commando Raid are fun variants on apple 2 sabotage. I dont think us games deserves the negavtivity it gets, tho.
