Eerievale Trailer 2005

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

As I promised a few times before, I finally uploaded the new Eerievale Trailer to the Eerievale Homepage. You can find it in the "the game" section and there you find it in the "media & downloads" section.

This trailer should mainly be looked at as a story teaser or a general teaser for the game, because it shows a few game environments and hints at the story, but no gameplay is shown.

On Euro JagFest 2005 and previously Games Convention 2005 (a big German games show) the trailer caught a lot of positive feedback and attention and of course I don't want to hold it back any longer from you folks here on Atariage, who didn't make it to Euro JagFest.

And of course even those who made it to the event are welcome to download and enjoy it again. :D

Have fun!

Regards, Lars.

hmmm....

That's nice and all but when are the chances of being able to play a final release of this likely? End of 2006, 2007? 2008? I'm easily reminded of D1 for some reason. It's starting to seem more ambitious than what I remember seeing. Especially now that you are trying to cross-develop / code for:

Jaguar

PC

Mac

Linux

Dreamcast

By the way.... who is Lars Hannig? ;-) :P

What's that running on?

I'm curious too, is that being rendered by a jag? Or if it isn't, could it be?

According to the website, the screenshots are of the PC version. The Jag should be able to do it. It was able to do MYST wasn't it?

After watching the trailer I'm assuming its running on the Jag since its named Trailer_jag.mpg.

D , D1 ... was on the Sega Saturn.... back in the day. I know it's not the same style game but that's what it reminds me of.

Hi folks!

Thanks a lot for the great feedback :D

I don't understand the question "what it's running on" in this matter. As said before, it's no gameplay footage, but a teaser. I don't know yet, how much animation can be put into the final game on the Jag. Some animation will be there for sure, I just don't know how much yet.

Regarding the question, if it's being rendered by a jag, it depends on your definition of the term "rendered". The game will be using pre-rendered bitmap graphics, similar to games like myst.

The trailer is definately not rendered on a Jag, if you mean that. :D

It took more like two PC systems (one althlon xp 2600, 1 GB RAM and one centrino m 1.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM) a bit more than two weeks rendertime in total.

Now if the Jag could do that, I would be in heaven.

But as the game is using prerendered graphics, it doesn’t matter how long it takes to render. The Jag will just have to display the pre-rendered graphics, and the biggest limitation with that would be memory. The trailer is in 320x240 resolution, so even the resolution will be about the same as in the final game.

Graphic wise all versions will be very similar, except for different resolutions.

Also these are not the final graphics yet. It’s more like concept graphics for the environments shown, so the final graphics will show the same environments, but they will be more detailed and another bit better looking I hope.

Yes. Even though Eerievale is more complex than Myst engine wise (and gameplay/story wise) the game will look similar on the Jag, with static screens similar to myst.

The filename "trailer_jag.mpg" was chosen, because there were two different versions of the trailer, which had a different order of systems appear at the end. Except for that it was identical though and I prefer this one.

Good question.

Let me be honest, I don't know when it will be finished. It will for sure still take some time and I don't want to restrict myself to a fixed date. It could be less than you mentioned, but it might also be more. I really can't tell yet.

Adventure game development is probably the most time consuming genre one can do, next to RPGs, if you want to make a really good decent game.

Although for me it's of course impossible to say if Eerievale will be such a great adventure game. The players decide about that, I just hope it will be :)

Next to the very time consuming aspects of a lot of researching (for the story for example) and all the writing of the story, dialogues etc there also is the design of the game itself which takes long, and coming up with all the puzzles and making sure it all fits together. Some games especially newer adventure games had the problem, that they were simply lacking the traditional adventure feeling. The player didn't feel like he entered the game world and actually was a part of it, but he always had the feeling of the game being just a collection of screens and obvious puzzles he had to solve to finally see the ending and get it over with.

The player also couldn't feel any love to detail in those games. The games just felt too "technical". And storytelling just isn't something technical, but something that involves and affects the player if it's supposed to work.

Afterall you could say a really good adventure game is the child of the marriage of a great novel and a great movie. Giving it elements of all three, the story of a novel, a bit of the presentation of a movie and the interactivity and gameplay of a game. So there are many elements you need to take care about, which are not important in other games.

And of course there also is the graphical aspect and music, which is very important.

The actual coding will probably be done in a few months in total for all systems, as I got some ideas and experience in writing the tech demos of the game already.

There also will only be two versions of code, one cross-platform C/C++ code and the custom Jag assembler code. So that makes it easier.

You are right that, Eerievale is getting a more ambitious project as it develops.

Since the early demos it grew into something much bigger and much better too.

It's also a project I have always wanted to do, so you can be sure that I want it to be as good as I can make it at this time. And I'd rather put more time into it, to make the player feel all the love to detail and all the blood and passion that went into the project, than being dissapointed with it myself later.

So I'm sure it will be worth the waiting time, because the game is constantly improving.

By the way.... who is Lars Hannig?

"It's me, Mario..." Ummm, I mean... Lars? ;)

Regards, Lars.

Hi!

JagMX, great that you changed your mind about selling your jag collection. :)

Fredifredo, there is none. You are welcome to convert a version yourself.

I originally thought about a cinepak version, but I gave it up, because it just didn't look and sound good enough as cinepak.

Me likes. I love the point-&-click horror genre. This is one game I'd probably pick up when it becomes available. Hmmm- Jaguar or Dreamcast? :?

BTW- I think I said this once before, but MAKE SURE your grammar/punctuation in the game is CORRECT & proofread everything. Nothing bothers me more in games when stuff is spelled wrong. It also detracts from the professionalism.

I didnt see any mistakes in that trailer. Keep up the good work!

D1 was also on the Playstation as I have it. ;) And Eerivale definitely reminds me of "D."

Hi!

D was released on most CD systems of that time... PSX, PC, Saturn, 3DO and I think Mac as well.

However when you say it reminds you of it, I'm not sure if it's actually a good thing or not ;) Afterall there were a lot of split opinions regarding D.

Also in what way does it remind you of D?

I never played D much, so if Eerievale reminds you of D, it's probably just as much as other horror graphic adventures might remind you of D. Although there aren't many games of this kind, so maybe that's it.

Anyway the gameplay and controls of Eerievale are very different.

Do you even get an inventory in D at some point?

If you mean it reminds you graphically of D, I think I really need to spend more time doing graphics. :D

Well, Both Eerievale and D have a kind of abstract, dark, disturbing, creepy type of feel to them. Like a weird, scary dream. It's a good thing. :D

:D Good to hear that.

Yes, Eerievale does indeed have parts that are quite weird, abstract and dark and also a bit disturbing sometimes. But also very different parts so there is quite a big contrast between the two. But you probably saw that in the trailer already.

I'm kind of a lurker. I post here and there, and dissapear for a while. I'm kind of torn here. I really like the game, and I certainly DO buy new Jaguar games (just got my HYPER FORCE and Total Carnage game in the mail today), but... I don't know if I really want to play an RPG game that's all about socialism and trys to paint a horrible picture of capitalism.

But, at least from a programming stand point, I think the game looks awesome! I love the graphics and it looks very cool. I just wish it could have a more non-political to it. Hahah.. but, I'll still buy it. I'll just pretend that it was the socialist leaders that brought the world to it's knees. :)

But definitely... it looks cool. I'll buy it.

What? How do you get out of the trailer its a game about socialism vs. capitalism?

Is the toilet ready to clamp you in the ass suppose to be capitalism? I don't understand how you've came to this conclusion.

Can you please elaborate on this?

HAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAAHAHAH

Damn, that's funny as hell...

Actually, I didn't get that from the trailer... hahaha....

If you go to his main web site, and you select the link "Gameworld"...

http://www.eerievale.de/english/world.html

Hhah... damn, that's funny though...

Specifically, this is what I'm referring to:

Life is nothing but one gigantic struggle for most of the common people. Many can hardly get what they need to survive, even if they work the whole day until they can hardly stand on their feet anymore. Wages are ridiculously low and work is often very hard and dangerous. Childlabour is the only way to survive for many families. Still death is lurking everywhere. There is no safety at work. Diseases and plagues strike people in the poor parts of the cities. Healthcare is only available to the rich.

But one day, there appears a man, almost out of nowhere, who has the dream of helping those without property, those condemned to live in poverty, hunger and sickness. He is born as one of them, but he is destined to create a city, where people get everything they need so badly and had no chance of obtaining where they lived. Save jobs, a fair wage, health care. Maybe an own little house with garden.
