What is the best hand held/portable system?

You could always try your luck on ebay and look for a Nomad that's the portible version of a Genesis. But as for what is out there right now. I would agree with the many others that a GBA is pretty good. There are many, many good games out there for it.

I'm rather surprised a nine year old girl would want one of those.  What's more surpriseing is you wanted a portable system, and what you bought is a system that is hardly portable at all.  It's huge and drain batteries like crazy.  No playing that in study hall that's for sure.  (Yes I know 9 year olds don't have study halls)

For my 9-year old, portable means in the car, in her room, on vacation or at relatives and friends houses. The reason I am getting the DC adapter and car adapter is because it drains batteries.

 

Let me get this straight - my daughter's favorite games are now available to her anywhere she wants and this is a bad thing? I'm not quite sure I get your logic there, chief.

i know it's over and done, but if you bought a psp couldn't you have just downloaded all the genesis games you wanted?  I don't like emulation, but you aren't me so I just thought I would throw that idea out there.

You are correct, but I agree with you - I don't like emulation either - whoever left the sex analogy had me LMAO! I was thinking the same thing - but I would never admit I've had relations with an inflatable Dolly Parton...or would I?

I gave my daughter the Nomad and she loved it. Quote "It's probably the best present I've ever gotten. It's amazing because I never knew it existed and I can't put it down!"

 

I should add the fact that I strung her along saying that a handheld that played the actual Sega Genesis games never existed..."BUT WOULDN'T IT BE COOL??? Wouldn't it be cool to be able to play all the games you already have? But alas......"

 

My wife and I have given her some pretty cool gifts over the years (her dollhouse given at age three that she still plays with was probably tops until now), but the look on her face when she opened the box is now imprinted/tatooed on my memory now forever. Good times!

 

Even the digital camera we gave her yesterday is better than ours, but the Nomad topped it.
