N-Gage Fans: What About Rifts?

Recommended Posts

For almost as long as I've been a videogame fan, I've been a fan of RPGs, the pen and paper kind. So, when Palladiumbooks announced they had entered a deal to get a videogame version of their pen & paper game Rifts on store shelves, I took notice. When they announced the game was going to be a turn based tactical RPG, my favorite genre, I took even more notice. When it was announced the game would be for the Nokia N-Gage...

Well, I lost almost all interest at that point.

Anyway, has one of the N-Gage owners around here purchased this little game? How does it compare to others of the genre? I'd kind of like to see it, but it isn't worth $130 or a 2 year cel contract to me.

Since it's so hard to find new Nokia games in stores now, I haven't picked it up. And I have no plans to activate my phone, so I hope that the single player game is pretty strong.

They've been saying great things about the game on Nokia's official forums, so that's a good sign. I need to download the game demo and give it a shot.

I was really excited about this one. However, now that the games can't be bought physically, I'm less excited. Still, I'm probably buying it after Christmas. Maybe I'll download the demo tomorrow. It looks really solid. I'm sad about how many games have come out lately for the N-Gage that I haven't been able to get. Just look at the list there under the "released" tab:

I'm also excited about the "upcoming" tab. I wish the system was still supported over here. :(

EDIT: Check this out:

That's the N-Gage game list. The white games are all "upcoming". Notice anything about the publisher of all of those? Why is Sega publishing three new games for the system? Given that they have resisted making a sequel to Pocket Kingdom, one of the best N-Gage games, and one of the more critically recognized one, and that N-Gage sales haven't been exactly shooting through the roof, it seems odd for them to do this. I'm not complianing, I'm just wondering if those games are games theyre also releaseing to the DS, or if they expect the N-Gage enabled smartphones to do really well.

I think those might be misprints. They have Atari Masterpieces volume 1 listed as being published by Atari, but volume 2 is being published by Sega? I think they just screwed up there. And I'm pretty sure that Habbo Island isn't coming from Sega either. I thought that was from Nokia themselves.

And to be honest, other than Pocket Kingdom and Sonic N, Sega's games for the N-Gage have sucked. Puyo Pop wasn't too bad, just a touch slow, but three games by Sega have been cancelled because of poor quality. Virtua Cop, Alien Front, and Sega Rally have all been killed off because they were too crappy to release. So if Sega's behind games like Shadow-Born and Habbo Islands, I don't think they'll be very fun.
