NES Defender II - Using Other Games Music?

Recommended Posts

I picked up today a copy of Defender II for the NES, and I immediately noticed upon loading that the menu music comes from a familiar nes game (sorry dont know the name but I know its common)

Once you press start to begin you hear the music from punch-out!! and when you clear a level you hear another different punch-out music!!

Now the question is who stole from who??

Defender II - NES (1988)

Punch Out - NES (1987/1993)

I was really puzzled!! Check it out!!

Defender II uses a lot of stock music. I believe the introductory theme came straight out of Hal Lab's version of Joust. Note that this peppy little song wasn't in the arcade versions of either game.

Aside from the disallowing smart bombs to be replenished with each new life you are awarded (as with the original arcade Defender), Defender II's music does seem rather inappropriate for use in the game. And yeah, I did notice that the music tunes are "borrowed" from Nintendo's Punch-Out game for the NES.

It's probably one of the most inaccurate arcade translations on a home game system infamous for them. There's not a lot of depth in a game like Defender II, and when you take what little is there away, the resulting game will leave you bored in minutes.

It's a sad, sad thing, too, because the basic game engine is really solid. The graphics are solid and the control is responsive, but the challenge and technique of the arcade version of Defender II is completely gone. It's like HAL Labs started designing the game but quit halfway through!

Kind of like the SMB3 warp whistle tune and the original Zelda whistle tune. They're also identical.
