How do you feel about shrinkwrapped games?

Recommended Posts

I Have a crap load of shrinkwrapped games in my collection and I have noticed that some of them are starting to get crushed and I was wondering if you guys think it would take away from the value of the games if I removed all the shrinkwrap from them?.

Yeah .. Whhat i do for that problem is make a small slit it the bottom .. Allows air to escape or get in or something but it stops the shrinking process and still looks perfectly shrinkwrapped

I agree that if a game is starting to get crushed due to the shrinkwrap, then slice a hole. Shrinkwrap will continue to shrink, but if something is sealed for 20+ years and it hasn't already seen signs of the crushing effect, then it should pretty much stay alright. Most shrinkwrap naturally has the small hole in it.

Well....I love shirkwrapped Atari boxes, I amitted to you that I have lots of orginal shrinkwrapped way back 1982 boxes and some '88 boxes, some of my atari boxes without shrinkwrapped.....I did remove orginal shrinkwrap from my Atari box and I put in Combat Two to keep mint for long time, to keep good value, that is my point of view....

The shrink wrapped games are great. Maybe try storing them in a cooler place? That might help. I always feel guilty opening a game that's been wrapped for 20 years On the other hand, it's like a tiny time capsule.

so do games as well as other items in shrinkwrap, compress and constrict over time? would in 200 years a sealed game be nothing but a small crushed brick?

so wha does happen with a shrinked game?

if its your only copy of that game, OPEN IT AND PLAY IT for the love of mike! But if you've got lots of copies, its a tougher call. The box ro me is more important than the wrap.

I have removed the shrinkwrap from many games that were getting crushed, to save them from further crushage. While having a shrinkwrapped game is nice, it's not a huge deal to me. Especially since people have been known to re-shrinkwrap games themselves. On more than one occasion I have bought a supposedly "New in the Box! Shrinkwrapped!" game on eBay only to find out that the game didn't have the original shrinkwrap.

Also, I store loose carts and manuals separately from boxes (for easier access), so if it's a game I don't have, I'll often open the box to extricate the manual and cart. I'm not a big box collector yet and if I'm lucky I'll never start down that path.

I have all my 2600 game cartridge collection in those big see through plastic bins with labels on them and I have them in this order:

1) Games shrinkwrapped.

2) Games Complete.

3) Games with instructions.

4) Games by them selves.

What I think I will do is just remove the shrinkwrapping from the ones that are getting crushed and leave the rest alone.

I would think that the shrinkwrap itself would split before crushing a box too badly. I've seen some shrinked boxes that were a little crushed but never any that were totally mangled. Anyone have horror stories about shrinkwrap damage they've seen first-hand?
