liveinabin #3 Posted December 2, 2005 The Mario games - particularly Super Mario World, Mario Kart and Yoshi's island are all great. There are lots of great RPGs, I love Chrono Trigger (though I doubt you'll find that cheap). Another killer title that is less well known than it ought to be is Uniracers. SO much fun with another player. What else.....wow, there were so many great games on that system.. Super Bomberman is great..um..Street Fighter 2 turbo is a really solid conversion..F-Zero is pretty cool...help me out here guys Too many games. JB #4 Posted December 2, 2005 Some titles I recommend... Super Mario World. Super Mario Kart. Super Metroid. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. (Hey, it's not super Zelda!) Illusion of Gaia. (Often overlooked in favor of Zelda and Metroid, but a damn fun action-adventure nonetheless.) Arkanoid: Doh It Again. (Get a mouse. 2 if you intend to play 2-player.) AtticGamer #5 Posted December 2, 2005 I say: Super Mario World The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers Mario Paint Sim City.

JB #7 Posted December 2, 2005 Try to find the cart with the 3 original mario games plus super mario world.I think it's called super mario all stars. 975121 Mario AllStars contains remakes of the 3 NES games, plus a remake of the japanese Super Mario 2. Mario AllStars + World adds Mario World to the mix. With a nice cosmetic tweak in that Luigi uses his own sprite instead of a Mario pallete swap. tmont #8 Posted December 2, 2005 Mario AllStars contains remakes of the 3 NES games, plus a remake of the japanese Super Mario 2. Remakes that suck, no less. Basically the programmers took all of the nice idiosyncrasies (or glitches) out of the first two Mario games, added 16-bit graphics, and re-released them. Then they actually added a glitch to SMB3. Being able to play SMB2j is cool, though. My favorites are: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Donkey Kong Country Mega Man X The 7th Saga
awsomo3000 #9 Posted December 2, 2005 (edited) Another killer title that is less well known than it ought to be is Uniracers. SO much fun with another player.975105 Uniracers is defintly awesome, It's what made me decide to take up unicycling. The super nintendo is actualy my favorate system, I would suggest the donkey kong country games (except maybe the third one, it's not too great). The mortal kombat games are also super great. And all the mario games of corse ( and don't forget the some what forgotten super mario RPG). Super nintendo metroid is hard, I like mario all stars. Those are some of the best ones that some to mind right now...although super nintendo has an endless verity of super awesome great games...soo it's not hard to find a great one.. JB #11 Posted December 2, 2005 Mario AllStars contains remakes of the 3 NES games, plus a remake of the japanese Super Mario 2. Remakes that suck, no less. Basically the programmers took all of the nice idiosyncrasies (or glitches) out of the first two Mario games, added 16-bit graphics, and re-released them. In my opinion, missing a few glitches doesn't make the remakes suck. And they added "16-bit" sound, too. Personally, I felt it was a mixed bag. I'm gonna focus mainly on the first game, as it's the one I'm most familiar with(having never actually owned an NES Mario 3 cart) as well as the one that was originally most distant from the SNES' capabilities and thus the most radically changed. General commentary: The save function was nice, especially for Mario 3. The addition of a "VS mode" to 3 was equally appreciated. The new soundtrack is an either/or. I can make an argument in both directions, though I'm leaning towards the SNES "remix." Saving the # of players was NOT appreciated, though I can see the logic in Mario 3 given the extensive amount of player-specific data. Mario 1/Lost Levels specific commentary: The graphical "splash" at the "world x-x" screen greatly improved the overall presentation. Sure we didn't REALLY need a terrain sample/enemy present indicator, but the game just looks nicer without that big black space. While the greater graphical detail is nice, I liked the "harsher" design of the NES graphics. One of the first things I noticed was the ? blocks didn't have rivets, and the bricks carried a "glassy" look. Really, there was no really good excuse for not adding a life indicator to the status bar in 1/2j aside from excessive attention to detail. It's a fault that should've been fixed, if only as an option(directly above the coin indicator is a good place for "mario-head x #"). 2j's poison mushrooms are somewhat defeated by making them neon purple. The point was originally that they looked VERY similar to the regular fungus, so if you weren't paying close enough attention you might grab them accidentally on-purpose. Sure it was evil, but... Mario 3 commentary: While maintaining seperate sprites for the Mario 3 mushroom was a nice bit of attention to detail, Mario 3's angular mushroom just looks ugly. They should've used the same 'shroom as they did with 1 and 2j, especially as the one used for 1/2j was ALREADY so close to the Mario 3 version(and almost wholely unrelated to Mario 1's original fungus anyways). Mario 2 commentary: Ummm...
tmont #12 Posted December 2, 2005 (edited) In my opinion, missing a few glitches doesn't make the remakes suck. And they added "16-bit" sound, too. I actually just bought this game from someone here, and I was bitterly disappointed in SMB2(USA) in general. I have a fairly intimate knowledge of the NES version, and that things that made it fun were the glitches (i.e. double jump, getting enemies stuck in walls, etc.), and they were eliminated. Granted, they were programming errors, but it would've been much cooler had they been left in. One nice/interesting thing they added to SMB2(USA) was that if you die, they allow you to change characters in the middle of the level, which was not possible on the NES version: you were stuck with whoever you chose for that level until you lost all of your lives. Also the background in 6-1 is particularly annoying, because Toad and the background have similar colors, so it's kind of hard to see yourself. The NES version had a much better contrast, which isn't really that important, but I've played a lot of Mario 2, so I noticed it. I haven't experimented with the Mario 1 remake, but I heard they took out the walking through walls and wall jumping glitches, so no minus world. They might have fixed the "little fiery mario" glitch as well. The glitch they added in SMB3 is not actually not possible on a console (without a modded controller), but they left this game alone for some reason. You can still walk through walls and all that good stuff. I don't particularly care for the 16-bit sound. Especially in SMB/SMB2j; it's too distorted or something. But this is all moot for me anyway, since I own all three of the first Mario games for NES. Edited December 2, 2005 by HeckYesIDid

While the Genesis/SNES battle DID end in a draw, the SNES was the follower of the NES, which had... 95%? of the US market. So it won a lot of affection by association. And the superior AV hardware means it doesn't show its age as bad as the Genesis, so the more modern-inclined gamers haven't seen a reason to kick it out. Sadly, the Genesis DOES show its age, and while it isn't a good reason, many have banished it for not looking/sounding as pretty.

In my opinion the SNES was the best system Nintendo put out to date. It has a plethora of good if not great games. If your still looking here are some to pick up: Super Mario Kart ActRaiser Super Mario Allstars Final Fantasy II Final Fantasy III Contra III Chrono Trigger Street Fighter II Championship Edition(or any for that matter) Legend of Zelda(all Zelda titles) Mortal Kombat III Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 Secret of Mana Lufia II Starfox Super Metroid Super Castlevania and many, many more...... vdub_bobby #24 Posted December 2, 2005 (edited) A couple of years ago I scoured the net looking for game rankings of older consoles, then I compiled them to come up with a list. Here's the top of the SNES list (in order): Chrono Trigger Ogre Battle Super Mario World Donkey Kong Country Final Fantasy III Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Super Metroid Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Super Bomberman 2 Super Mario All-Stars Secret of Mana Contra III: The Alien Wars Super Castlevania 4 Terranigma Zombies Ate My Neighbors Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals Earthbound Final Fantasy II Super Mario Kart Breath of Fire 2 Tetris and Dr. Mario Mega Man X ActRaiser Killer Instinct Illusion of Gaia (Illusion of Time) Plok Cybernator Robotrek Secret of Evermore Soul Blazer Starfox Shadow Run 7th Saga I haven't played most of these, by the way, so take it with a grain of salt. For each of these games I was able to find at least 5 separate, somewhat credible ratings. The Legend of Zelda: ALTTP had the most ratings; it had 11. EDIT: Of the ones I've played, I'd rate Super Mario Kart tops, followed by Super Metroid, Zelda, and Killer Instinct.
