JB #178 Posted March 31, 2006 I think AA needs its own "Ripping off charities is OK because they're just not a fairly priced bargain for me (and hey games are a life necessity) or I don't like how they are run, but don't overcharge me by $.10 for shipping anything, because hey man that's thievery!!" forum. I second the motion.

Artlover #181 Posted March 31, 2006 Well... there is a little confusion here. Goodwill is a NFP organization that uses money to train handicapped people, often for minimum wage positions *within* Goodwill... Meanwhile, the executive management staff of Goodwill corporation is allowed, by law, to take a draw from profits equivillent to the salary a similar position in private industry would pay. Actually, *this* aspect trickles down all the way, in theory. So a manager of a Goodwill store should be entitled to the same pay that the manager of a small department store like Ross or Payless would make. My guess is that individual managers get to base their salary on how profitable their particular store is. I doubt the clerks or guys in the back make what clerks and warehouse guys make at say, Target, for example, though. And this can (and does) take place before a single CENT goes to the intended recipients of the charity. If, after paying everyone, there isn't anything left for the needy, guess what... the needy don't get anything. People in the back make the $5.15/hr mw. As asst mgr, I only made $6 & change/hr. My manager who worked there 14 years was only making $8.50/hr. You can also forget about OT or anything else. You will work no more then 40 hours. Bonus, Raises? What mean these words? We couldn't so much as get a baling cage with 4 round wheels, but they buy a whole fleet of brand new cars and suv's for the corporate executives. You know, so they can look good when arriving at meetings and stuff or something. Got forbid they should have to drive their own car to work, like everyone else (gasp). I'm mopping the floor of an unairconditioned room with a rake so some asshat in an airconditioned office somewhere can get a better office chair, or to have a handicapped assistant to be their lacky and get their coffee every morning. Only one thing actually trickles down there. It's a 4 letter word, starts with S, ends with T, has an H and I in the middle. Comes out your bottom side a while later after having put food in your top side.

n8littlefield #185 Posted March 31, 2006 (edited) It's about ripping off Goodwill - you know going in and doing stuff like putting a more valuable Lawrence Welk record into the sleeve from a less expensive Joe Piscapo Live album and getting it for half price? BTW, just because I criticize Goodwill and it's rather high prices doesn't mean I advocate stealing from them. I feel a Mercades is overpriced, but it doesn't mean I'd go steal one. vdub_bobby #188 Posted March 31, 2006 (edited) YES...How do I unsubscribe from this thread??? Easy. A simple two-step process. First: Go to this page: Then: Do NOT click here: Why the crap do you need to unsubscribe from a *thread*? Do you lack all willpower; you must click indiscriminately? JB #189 Posted March 31, 2006 Why the crap do you need to unsubscribe from a *thread*? Do you lack all willpower; you must click indiscriminately? There's actually a thread "subscription" option, where the board automatically informs you every time anyone replies to a thread you've replied to. I disabled it as soon as it appeared, because it's just annoying.

However, please be mindful of from who and where you choose your target. I don't steal anything I can't spell. It's pretty embarassing, I googled Joe Piscapo to spell his name right, but I can't spell Mercedes. I guess that shows how far from my budget they are

I tried to be polite, poltically correct, and give the organization the benefit of the doubt... but, I bet this description of the reality of the situation is pretty accurate. Although, clearly, the answer then is to form and sit on the executive staff of a "NFP" organization.

+FujiSkunk #196 Posted April 1, 2006 I remember people dumping there trash at GoodWill, cheaper and easier then going to the dump, or am I thinking of a episode of the Simpson ? No, it's not that uncommon to dump stuff at thrift stores. That's why most of them have signs explicitly banning this practice, usually along the lines of "NO after-hours donations!" Bruce Tomlin #198 Posted April 1, 2006 Which still doesn't justify robbing Goodwill. It explains why some Goodwills and Thrift stores have such relatively high prices, though. The big problem I have with Goodwill's prices is the arrogance they have. While they regularly have rotating tag color sales for clothing, most GW stores would rather throw the other stuff in the dumpster than admit it was overpriced and mark it down after a few weeks. Artlover #199 Posted April 1, 2006 (edited) I got into arguments with my manager over prices. PS2 steering wheel controller, some cheap piece of crap, no manauls, wrong box (box was from a logitech), no way to test it (and probably broke considering the box it was in). Manager goes "playstation 2 stuff, thats expencive, mark it $30". The fact that you could buy a brand new 3rd party wheel of better quality from Bestbuy for $25 and it came with store and product warranties meant nothing to them. Yeah, $30, and it sat there for weeks, while every single person who ever thought about it said the exact same thing. Manager took a day off, I marked it down to $15, and it sold a few hours later. I was wrong for doing it too. Yeah, fine, next time, go ahead and make the $0 on it when you throw it away instead. Bah, I'm glad I don't work there anymore. Stupidest damned place I've ever seen. Paranoid #200 Posted April 1, 2006 Every item they throw away that could have been sold doesn't make $0... they're *losing* money on any item they throw away, because of the costs associated with preparing it, pricing it, having it take up retail space, ending up taking space in their dumpster (which they pay a rental and disposal fee on). Do they really throw away electronics that they overprice that do not sell? I wonder if the new e-waste laws are going to make them rethink their strategy on accepting electronic donations.
