Online gaming, Cable vs. DSL

Recommended Posts

I moving soon and they dont have cable, so I'll be getting DSL and a dish probably.

Has any one here tried both? or had issues with DSL. I play mostly Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm on the PS2 mostly. I also may get an Xbox in the future.

I play CS:S all the time on dsl, and I get a ping of average, 35 to 40.

No problems at all here.

Can't speak for consoles, but I've had no issues with either cable or DSL and I do a lot of online gaming.

If you are online console gaming LIVE is clearly the way to go. Give it a few weeks if you don't believe me. It really changes how online gaming works.

As for connections, well Ive heard good and bad about both DSL and Cable so it really seems to depend on the provider and the area. And with Cable how saturated the network is at any given time.

Personally Im a fan of DSL and will continue to use it. Dedicated line and plenty of speed in most areas.

It's all about ping and lag. It's tough to generalize about the technology since the infrastructure is different wherever you go. In general, cable has a faster download time, but you need to deal with the cable company if something goes wrong. ;) In my experience, the big bad phone company is more responsive. YMMV.

Go to www.broadbandreports.com and play with the speed test tools -- and to read reviews of the internet providers in your area.

I have XBL, and DSL. I run my DSL into a Linksys router/ switch combo, and then into another switch, and then into a HUB. I still have the best connection when I play Rainbow.

Compared to the others in the session? Of course you do -- the ping to the local host should be 0 ms!

You also mentioned satilite..

unfortunatly.... do NOT use this for gaming.. theres just too much latency in the signal for it to be effective in real time applications like online gaming..

Personaly I perfer DSL for my connection.. pretty much for the whole direct connection thing, when I was on Cable modems, my conenction around here was pretty much the same as a good modem at peak hours..

As I mentioned before and saying it again. When you get online and talk to people you will hear all kinds of opinions on both DSL and cable. The best bet is to get on dslreports and read up on your local providers. Talk to people around you. It really depeneds on the area and the providers. I LOVE SBC but we just moved to an area that doesn't have SBC. Now we have qwest, and the service good, but the customer support is HORRIBLE for the most part.

Talk to some co-workers and see what they have and like also....
