Assuming this is the main Panther Material's thread.. 

 

 

In the 16-page ATARI feature in the new Retro Gamer Annual, Volume 10,there is a quote from D. Scott Williamson, regarding the Panther.

"I worked on the Atari Panther and technically it was probably too much like the older Atari 8-bit computers to be competitive"

Leonard Tramiel told Arcade Attack "A console version  (of the ST) was discussed but the cost was too high. 

 

We Love Atari (Volume Two)"  Page 154 has an internal Atari memo for a (never realized) "STE Game Machine" codenamed "Project Robin. 

 

 

1986 puts it into STFM technology, the memo puts it into STE technology. 

 

Crying shame Rob Zdybel and others can't remember a thing about it.

It's probably an idea that came up multiple times since it's obvious.  It wouldn't surprise me if they discussed STFM and STE versions at various times, then ran the numbers and decided against it.
