Neither, both are a rip off. A Mega STE runs about $200 on ebay and a Falcon goes for about $400.

Ok, fair enough..

Which would you get at the price you listed?

Depends on what you want to do. If you mostly want to play games, then go for the Mega STE, it has far better game compatibility and there are only a small handful of Falcon specific games. If you want to use applications, surf the web, or try to mimic the functions of modern computer, then go with the Falcon.

I'd pretty well go with what you said, the Mega STe is the pinnacle of the ST line, and will cost you more than the $200 for one, to take another model and upgrade it to where the Mega STe is. It also does have a few (no longer supported) expansion choices that are not available for a bog standard ST.

With that said though, if you are looking to the future at all, then the Falcon is the only choice. Rodolphe Czuba and others have added amazing upgrade options to the Falcon and are continuing to do so. 68060 accelerators, PCI options, LAN support, hi-res video card support, USB, and more...

Why not do what a lot of Atarians have done? Get both... :-)

I have seen both dealers bid on Atari stuff like Falcons and Mega STs! They turn around and sell them for those prices!!!

Holy Smokes!

I always liked the Mega ST form factor versus the "all-in-one" design of the Falcon. And the Mega ST has a GREAT keyboard. Never used a Falcon, though, but for compatibility reasons I'd probably pick up a Mega ST first and then a Falcon later. :)

Just check on www.ebay.com but check in other countries aswell...

I am sure a mega-ste can be bought around $50-$70 when you look good and a falcon normally between $100-150.

From my experiences, last 3 Falcons I have seen on Ebay went for more than $400. I was lucky and bought Falcon during summer for 160 Euro.

Don't want to contradict you, but I really doubt it. If you can get either one, or both, at those prices, you better grab them. ;-)

I just sold my 2nd Falcon, with a known questionable expansion port, for $300, and the going rate for pristine condition Falcons seems to be closer to $350-400 or so. As far as the Mega STe goes, I just paid $150 for one, and the going rate that I've seen on Ebay is more like $200-250.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info.

From what i gather:

MegaSTE

Pro's: cheaper than the Falcon and runs more ST apps and games.

Con's: replacement keyboards and hard drives for it are hard to come by.

Falcon

Pro's: bigger internal hard dive that's more common. looking to the future! :D

Con's: More expensive, less compatible then the megaSTe

Anything else i missed?

Again, thanks for all the help....

BTW i have access to a sc1224 monitor.. if that help's.

The SC1224 should work with either computer, i have two of them, one for the Falcon and one for the ST.

you can use sc1224 monitor with both of them.

Is best electronics trying to rip us off? Do I need an adapter no matter which monitor i decide to use on a Falcon?

From best electronics website:

Falcon ST Monitor Adapter

This adapter plugs into to Falcon DB19 Video port and allows you to use one of the SM124, SM125, SM147, SC1224 and SC1435 (13 pin) Atari monitors on the Falcon computers. Atari Adapter with clamp on R.F. line Filter. CB102157 $24.95

Falcon VGA Monitor Adapter

This adapter plugs into the Falcon DB19 Video port and allows you to use a standard IBM VGA monitor on the Falcon CB102158 $24.95

I really would like to get a falcon but i'm leaning more towards the mega ste.

Plus this helps alot too! more from best electronics website:

Atari TT and MegaSTE Owners

Each New 324 MB SCSI Hard Drive is Anti Static bagged, in the original Factory OEM box with a 90 day 120 Day Warranty!!

CB103115 SCSI 1, 324 MB Hard Drive $75

I guess this hard drive only work's in the TT and MegaSTE's not the regular MegaST's, right?

I gotta goto bed now....

bye all

Yes you need an adaptor for either monitor type. For some odd reason the falcon video out is a 19 pin D-Sub connector that provides pinouts for the signals for VGA and for the older Atari RGB and mono monitors. You need an adaptor to select which ones and to present them in either the 13 pin atari connector or the DB15 VGA one. The Falcon can tell which type of monitor you have connected by whether 1 pins (called M1 and M2) are high or low.

Atari chose strange connectors many times. For example SIO on 8bits, or DIN 13 on ST for video out, or 19 pin on Falcon...

Fortunately it is no problem to make adaptor yourself. I have one with 2 switches connected to M1 and M2 so I can tell Atari which monitor is used.

Best Electronics and Brad are your friends. They are expensive in some cases, but the proprietor, Brad, is an Atarian through and through. He's helped me more times than I can count. :-)

The Falcon was designed so that upgrading ST owners could still use their old SC1224s, or if they liked use more modern VGA style monitors. To this end, they made 2 different adaptors.

If its a standard SCSI hard drive, it will work with any Atari ST, TT or Falcon...although you might need something like ICDs Link 2 in the STs case. Also, depending on what version of TOS you are using, as well as some hardware limitations like the Mega STEs HD controller, you might be able to use a drive but not all of its space.

HTHs. :-)

OK, now the question, where do I look inside my Mega STE to find out if it has a SCSI hard drive?

Christmas is coming and I'm looking to upgrade my Mega... Bigger hard drive and Color monitor. :D

Maybe I should just talk to Brad when I get serious about this....

That's an easy one! There is a small, permanently embedded screw on the bottom of the case, front, slightly

right of center, that will unscrew and release the hard drive cover on the top right hand side. There are a few

wires to watch, but other than that, you're looking right at your HD. (actually its in the "lid" that swings up. :)

HTHs.

Check again the last 2 I watched went for over 500 usd. Now the STE on the other hand. I been getting them for under$50. I got a brand new STE, with 2 megs in it, and a megafile 30 and monitor all under $50 so those are going cheap. That seams about the norm. I did try to get a STE not to long ago but the owner wanted $200. It was computer monitor, and software. But who cares about the software its free all over the internet.

I'd have to say get both too, especially if you were willing to pay $850 for just one, you can both for less! But Falcon games are very cool, and more and more ST/STE games are being made Hd compatible and compatible with the Falcon as it's full speed as well as the Mega STE's 16mhz full speed. Just look here: http://www.tphf.karoo.net/dbug/falcon.htm

Check out 16/32 systems (link in dealers section of links here on AA) for all the cool Falcon only and STE/Falcon only software.

Never mind. Forget AA links, it's missing a TON of links now for some reason, and 16/32 systems is one. here is the link below:

http://www.1632systems.co.uk/www/html/prod_ind.htm

Here's another 16/32 store link that shows even more Falcon games and more pictures:

http://www.1632-sales.zenwebhosting.com/ac...n_Games_13.html

Here are some STE only games or STE/falcon only: http://www.1632-sales.zenwebhosting.com/ac...E_Games_74.html

One last link at 16/32 with games compatible with them all (ST/STE/TT/FALCON): http://www.1632-sales.zenwebhosting.com/ac...T_Games_27.html

Seriously, we are trying to patch and enhance games for the mste and the falcon, and the results have been very promising. Maybe at some point we'll have a requests section, but bare in mind that a)currently there's only 2 of us!, b)we have lots of stuff in the pipeline!

You're doing a GREAT job! My Mega STE just love's having all those games on it's hard drive.

I only played a couple so far: Virus and Starglider II. Great stuff!

I can't wait to see which one's get the special treatment next!
