Tynesoft's Winter Olympiad '88

Recommended Posts

I tried my share of Winter Games and Summer Games and other similiar games over the years on my Atari, and they were good titles. But I never saw this one back in the day, becuase it was never released in the U.S. to my knowledge. But This game has it all over Epyx's Winter Games as far as I'm concerned. Brilliant graphics and multiple perspectives, Scaling sprites and parallax scrolling, also with very excellent background art, I never expected a title of this magnitude from Tynesoft, shooters are one thing, but this is a masterpiece of winter sports. As fara as I'm concerned this is to the Atari 8-bit what Alpine games is to the Lynx.

Well,

beware - there is another game from Tynesoft called "Winter Olympics". This is not the same as Winter Challenge / Winter Olympiad 88. where the latter has great gfx, Winter Olympics is programmed for a 32k Atari (most probably a 400 or 800 Atari in mind), uses simple gfx and recycles background gfx for several events... Otherwise said, WC / WO 88 is great, Winter Olympics (32k) is not...

Last not least one question: Was Atari Olympics an official / commercial release (or planned as a commercial release) ?!? Maybe stolen by pirates / hackers / crackers (and thus never finished) ?!? Or was it a program made just for fun ?!?

Well, the game is unfinished, crashes at the end and so far it is the only olympic game for max. 1 player and last not least it does not save any scores... On the other side the game is funny, playing with a baby or a robot or an alien or a grandpa (with a stick) as a main character... -Andreas Magenheimer.

The pink color used reminds me of some Atari utilities... My guess is that this was developed at Atari just for fun in 1983 or 1984 when there was this big craze for the Olympic Games in LA. Remember the Atari was also the official computer of this olympiad!

Is this Winter Olympiad 'the' definitive version for the A8?

Yes, by far... Still would be nice to know what really happened to Winter Games. It was first canned by Epyx then by Atari so it may exist in some form...

Los Angeles 1984 olympics was released in the UK as 'Track and Field', it also came with a specialist controller (similar to the Konami coin op game 'Track and field') although on the game loading screen the game displays 'Los Angeles 1984 olympics'...However the game was merely an adaption of Activision's 'Decathlon' in that it only played a few events

As for Winter games, I believe the UK/Euro release was going to be done by US gold (A8 version) the interesting thing is though is that the 7800 and 2600 versions (UK/EURO PAL) were done by Epyx...Perhaps USG didnt have the rights over the games system versions
