Dragon quest 8

Recommended Posts

So what are peoples opinions on this one? bought the US import for the PS2 and just been playing for a few hours. I just cant help but to think that im playing a zelda game, the sound effect after winning a battle sounds fresh from an N64. The happy tunes in the background are driving me nuts, It's beginning to feel like a disney game,,,,, Many people played this? I'd like to feel like it's worth playing through, Things like storyline? The package doesnt say from 8 and up,,,

The US release is different in many ways from the Japanese release. For one the music in the Japanese import is synth sound. There also wasn't any spoken dialog so even more reading to be done.

I actually am loving this game quite a bit. However, I do agree it needs more than 3 or 4 tunes!! Ugh...that "Gone with the wind" like overture it plays drives me crazy. The funky tune used for the battles (Which never really changes...BTW). Is way out of place for what is actually happening on the screen. And then there is that circus happy stuff playing in many of the towns...argh!

I love the graphics in this, game play and the fact they used the old school sound effects in some parts of the game is really cool. (BTW using old sound effects has been a dragon quest staple in the series). As I understand it, these are actuall the sound effects from the first Dragon Quest/Warrior game which debuted on the NES.

All I can tell you is that you have to stick with it long enough. Once you get to exploring actual dungeons a bit and start getting somewhere with it, you will want to play it through.

BTW...this is so far...the LONGEST RPG I have ever played. I am just now at about the halfway mark in this game storywise, and yet I have over 100 hours in the game thus far?! Most of that was spent leveling up or looking around the land for hidden chests. As a comparison. I was able to get all the materia and strongest spells in FF7 and beat the game in just over 90 hours total. So only being about 50% in this one at 100+ hours already played is just mind boggeling to me!

Stick with it...if it doesn't appeal to you, then ebay it I guess.

Matt...

I haven't played any of the other Dragon Warrior games so I can't comment on this being longer than any of the others. I just know that DQ8 is the longest RPG I have ever played. Previous to this, might have been the entire week long gaming session required to get through Eye of the Beholder II back in the day. I think I got a total of about 6 hours sleep that entire week...hehe...

Still my favorite EOB game that came out.

personally, i did not like it at all... i think the story-line was not well thought up + pretty boring, and because its on the PS2 the graphics could use some enhancing. The last thing was that i did not like the voice acting that much.(i got a free demo so I'm not just making this up)

but besides that stuff i liked it :D

Well...as for it seeming like a kids game. That is only true up to a point. There are many references to Jessica's ummm....assets in the game from several NPCs...

And once you get a cetain dance costume, ears, and fishnet stockings for ole Jessica...it suddenly doesn't see so much like a kids game anymore and really delves heavily into the fantasy that it is...hehe...

Absolute garbage. Slow, plodding combat, retarded menu interface, and THAT HACK WHO'S CHARACTER DESIGNS LOOK EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME NO MATTER WHAT every god damn where. It's like a slower Dark Cloud outside of combat, and a slower Dragon Quest 1 inside.

So ive now spent may hours on this, Been on a break for 3 days and took the ps2 and only dragon quest 8. Yes the load times and the interface are also pretty awful which i didnt mention before. Here comes the "However" :) I gotta say, on a tropical island with no cable tv and cylconic storms, Dragon quest 8 has turned out to be a pretty good romp after all. Ive spent the time Crossbow and with the sound turned off and the radio on, Its not such a bad RPG at all. I do like my rpg's so ive finished alot of them, My only complaint when i look at it is that dragon quest 8 is different.

Too me..DQ8 seems to still retain the same gameplay as the first DW games on the old NES. Even the first DW required you to do insane amounts of leveling up before tackling some bosses or even dungeons. In this regard, I actually have found DQ8 to be easier. Either that..or I'm leveling up pretty well from place to place. I have been exploring everywhere I can...and this forces a lot of battles to be fought. In addition...I didn't even start using my stupid Zoom spell until after Port Prospect...hehe. I had it..but never looked into it or realized what it was about. Now...I use it like crack to get from place to place to advance the story. And I haven't really used my ship but the one time I needed it to get to Baccarat anyway. Well..there is that one secret island not shown on the map....hehe...and you can't zoom there... :)

BTW...Load times? What load times? DQ8 takes less time to load up battles and cities and other places than many of Cube games...

Long load times on the PS2 are any of the Nickelodeon games...ugh...Spongebob games especially seem to suffer from this. In fact...I think even Katamari Damacy has some longer load times than DQ8 does...

BTW...you played much with the Alchemy pot yet?...some good stuff to be had from messing with that thing.

Also...another hint for you. If you see something interesting anywhere in teh game....chances are...you can get to it eventually...and there will be something interesting there. Ever notice the cave under the long bridge between the first two lands towards the beginning of the game?

;)

This game is shorter than Dragon Warrior VII Tempest. I'm still playing through DQ8 right now and haven't played through it like a madman as it'll likely be 2010 before we see DQ9.

DQ8 is amazing! If you've played through the previous titles you'll really appreciate the transition to 3d. I was a skeptic but promised to buy any and all Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games that are released and I'm pleased with the purchase. By far THE RPG of 2005.

By the way, the Alchemy Pot is awesome! Did anyone try to flood the 'market' with the stronger medicinal herbs? I've been tempted to continually make them and sell them and see what happens.

Buying an ingredient for a new piece of armor... 200 gold, buying another ingredient for a new weapon 1000 gold, finding a new recipe in a book for an awesome new item... priceless! :)
