Inky #1 Posted January 10, 2006 I recently had to.. erm.. replace my Gamecube with a new one, butthe only one that the store had was a Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness model... I decided that since the game came with it for free, I'll play it for like 30 minutes, and probably put it away for the rest of my life. I was wrong. Dead wrong. I have now logged over 12 hours playing that damn game. As a lifelong Pokemon hater, I never thought I'd get immersed into one of its video games, yet here I am, battling my level 25 Evee every chance I get. Help me! I'm a Poke-holic! figgler #3 Posted January 10, 2006 Pokemon is like that. Deceptively cute and all kinds of addicitive - it's no wonder people shun it and then become hopelessly hooked. I really got into Blue and Red (the first ones) and the cartoon of course, though now I think the Poke-universe is just too big and daunting to get into again. When I first started there were only 150, now there's, I don't know exactly, but hundreds more to catch for sure..
+Random Terrain #4 Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) I hate Japanimation. Ugly characters, ugly shapes, crappy voices. It's been the same crap since I was a kid back in the 1970s. I never understood, even as a kid, how anyone could watch stuff that looks so bad. It's so ugly. Not just ugly, it's fugly. I refuse to play games that look that way too, so I'll never get hooked. liveinabin #5 Posted January 10, 2006 They were great games, but now there are too many creatures. I was hoping, with each successive game, they'd have a bigger, more sprawling adventure. But no, same old running about, more monsters. So I jacked it in.

There are two camps of Pokemon fans: 1. Those that like a good, well done RPG 2. Those that enjoy watching small furry amimals fight to the death. I'm a little of both!! Enjoy the game, see if you can find Ash in it!!!
MacbthPSW #7 Posted January 10, 2006 I've been avoiding Pokemon for years, but found Pokemon Blue for classic Gameboy for $2 several months ago, and finally tried it in early December and got really hooked for a while. I didn't realize how much it had in common with the original Final Fantasy gameplay-wise. But I think I'll continue to avoid newer Pokemon games unless I find them really cheap
+-^CrossBow^- #8 Posted January 10, 2006 Yeah....I was in the "I hate Pokemon!" camp as well. Until I got Collesiem (SP?) almost 2 years ago. Needless to say...it was played nightly in the house until I stopped playing due to frustation of not being able to beat the very very last guy in the game of the story. So now it sits on my memory card with like 3 level 52+ creatures who still can't kick enough ass for me to conquer the basic game. I have to admit...Gale of Darkness still catches my eye from time to time...hehe. I'm sure I will pick it up one of these days.

I also bought him Red and played that on my Gameboy Pocket. Years later, after both Stadium games, the Gold/Silver games, the GBA games and now the two Gamecube games, my kids and I have decided that it's a terminal sickness. The thing is, even though it has simple game play, you can make it as complex as possible to play competitivly against other humans or the harder events in the newer games. To be quite honest I like the hero from Colossuem better than the kid from XD. But this game is much larger. If you liked the Stadium games, then get the first one because of the Colussuem mode vs the RPG only second game.
Avid Fan #10 Posted January 10, 2006 I could never get into pokemon. I never tried any of the games, just the pokemania from the late 90's killed it for me. Same with Final Fantasy, I could just never get into the cutesy-anime Japanese thing. Which is funny cause I spent a month or so tearing through The Third Age, which is a Final Fantasy ripoff, but I think the LOTR theme is what kept me playing (the game is cool, but the wrong theme could kill it for me)
+Random Terrain #11 Posted January 10, 2006 . . . cutesy-anime Japanese thing. 997647[/snapback] Yeah, and although the stuff is supposed to look cute, it ends up looking the opposite to me. Certain types of puppies are cute. The same with many kittens, but the stuff they come up with that is supposed to be cute looks ugly and offends my senses and make me think that millions of people have had the cute recognition software in their brains removed. Chickybaby #12 Posted January 10, 2006 [Takes the podium] Hi, I'm a cute lil chick and I have a problem... I really couldn't stand Pokemon. I was also the Mgr. at KBToys that got stuck with "Pokemon Saturday" when the ever brilliant corporate entity decided that when Pokemon was so popular in the 90's they'd run tournaments at the stores with up to 30 kids competing each week - yay me. *wince* So I not only had to moderate, run, and organize these events but also buy the damn cards and participate as well - that was "highly encouraged", and make sure I knew how to use each new promo card that came out each week/month. *double wince* I however love pinball and when the price of Pokemon pinball dropped to $2 used I decided to get it. Baaaad move. Man that game was great and I never thought I'd say it but it really is an awesome pinball game. So awesome I got the second/Ruby Sapphire one. I wasn't as impressed w/ the second as I was the first but still I got sucked in... [/Takes seat and waits for next story]
+FujiSkunk #13 Posted January 10, 2006 Well, since Random threw in a contrary opinion, let me offer mine. Never played the card game, never played any of the video games, and I finally lost interest in the cartoon (but I still watch other anime, nyah!). I don't plan on looking back, especially after reading these "horror" stories.
classicgamingguy #14 Posted January 10, 2006 He he!! Oh, the memories, the pain, the addiction....and here I am waiting for a Pokemon for the DS...argh...the addiction remains still, even though I haven't really played a Pokemon game for 6 months. I won't mention my giant Pikachu and little Pikachu sitting down in my computer/game room...oooo no, I won't mention that at all. Once you start playing, you'll NEVER stop! MWAAAHAAAHAAAHAAA!!! Ahem, great games, nonetheless. Welcome to the insanity...hope you enjoy the ride!! Steve

It's escapism pure and simple, nothing wrong with that I happen to enjoy it (though not as much as some folks out there). But as for pokemon, I enjoyed the the first 3 games (red, blue, yellow) but after that I never really played the games. About a year ago I picked up blue agin (after selling all three years earlier) and enjoyed it enough to beat it once more. Then I though hey why not pick up the game boy color version? I did, couldn't get into it at all. The monsters didn't feel as creative, and thanks to the wonder of 8-bit rpgs graphics I never knew where the hell I was or where I was going. So I never made it very far. Honetly If I had any interest in the new one (which I really don't thanks to my new found hate of rpgs) I would be a little embarrassed buying it, since nothing carries the "for kids" stigma quite the same way pokemon does. If I really wanted it I'm sure I could suck it up, but I really don't so there isn't even mcuh point in trying.

classicgamingguy #21 Posted January 11, 2006 Au Contraire (or however it's spelled)! I personally enjoyed Dr. Mario when I was playing it extensively. The reason? I found the gameplay unique in the setting, although not the premise behind it. I also enjoyed the music, and the fact that when you "zapped" a bug, he would fall over and kick his little legs up in the air. lol Steve
liveinabin #22 Posted January 11, 2006 So is this new Pokemon GC game a good adventure in it's own right? If so, I might check it out. What drove me from Pokemon was its increasing reliance on just training and training your team. Sure, an RPG needs a battle system, but not at the expense of the game. I think it was Pokemon Ruby that finally turned it all sour for me. My idea of hell is Pokemon Stadium, a joyless nightmare, so if it's even 1000 miles from that, I'm interested
skem #23 Posted January 11, 2006 I too at once fell victim to the pokemon games, I happened to buy the special edition for the gameboy color. There weren't alot of good games out at the Navy Excahnge and I was going on deployment. There I am in the middle of the ocean and decide it's time to play a game that will take a long time to beat. I wish I had never turned that switch to on...damn you pokemon...LOL Now that I am finally over the craze, I hope to help fellow addicts get off the addiction...you should guy a game like this instead http://cgi.ebay.com/NINTENDO-64-SYSTEM-GAM...1QQcmdZViewItem

Yes, it does require training and powering up, but the story is pretty good for this kind of RPG.
classicgamingguy #25 Posted January 12, 2006 How many kids do you think have the XD skin on their Gamecubes? I'd really like to know how the craze is doing these days. As I said, I kinda fell out of it for the time being. I think I'm just catching my breath, but if something new comes to the DS that involves creative use of the Pokemon franchise, I would probably buy into it again.
