+RangerG #1 Posted January 15, 2006 (edited) I changed this topic title because Mike had me send him the 2600 board and he socketed the chip (and paid shipping back to me). I will do the mod the weekend. A big thanks from a happy customer. Take care, RG Help! I am trying to mod my 2600 (it's a Vader - rev. 16 1980) with the 8bit domain mod, but I can't get the bottom piece off (the TIA ?). Is it socketed/soldered on or I just keep trying to pry it up with a screwdriver. I have tried with a screwdriver and an extractor and I don't want to break it. THANKS for the help. Take care, RG Edited January 27, 2006 by RangerG

+RangerG #3 Posted January 15, 2006 That's what I thought, thanks Supercat. So - I guess some 4 switchs are soldered and some are socketed. Anyway to know externally or by models? Thanks!
A.J. Franzman #4 Posted January 15, 2006 My best guess is that almost all "woody" 4-switchers have their ICs socketed. I have one here that is soldered, but I don't know if it has its original motherboard or has been "Frankensteined". Vaders are probably much more likely to not have sockets. +RangerG #5 Posted January 15, 2006 AJ -- Thanks for the tip - I was hoping to mod a Vader, but now I should look out for a woody. I had no idea that some were soldered and some socketed. Take care, RG
A.J. Franzman #6 Posted January 15, 2006 (edited) I could unsolder the chip, install a socket and the mod for you if you like, but the cost plus shipping two ways would probably be almost as much as buying another console. If you have a large collection, you might be able to barter some items from my want list as payment, which might make it worthwhile to you. See the first link in my sig. +RangerG #7 Posted January 16, 2006 Thanks AJ, but it will be too much of a pain and I don't have anything on your want list. Again - nice offer.
Spirantho #8 Posted January 17, 2006 Best advice that I can think of is to get a knackered 4-switch woody off eBay (you should be able to find one that's been too enthusiastically Armor-All'ed or something), and put the motherboard from that into your Vader case. As far as I can think they're the same design.
bones #9 Posted January 18, 2006 I just ran across a Vader rev17 with the same problem. At least it's a problem if your soldering skills are marginal. Of the 40 or so 4 switch consoles I've opened this was the only one without socketed chips -- so it's a safe bet that most woodgrain systems would have the sockets.
