My apologies!

Gorf

Recommended Posts

Well it seems a bug got past me and I released garbage to you all. I took

your good money and sold you all junk. I am ashamed and embarrased!

All sales of Gorf are officially suspened until we fix the bug.

I will try to reimburse everyone with a fixed copy of the disc. I will try to

figure out how I can do this. Keep those discs, white or blue!

They just became even more valuable!

The bug: hit the flagship with your last ship and get hit at the

same time and the machine wigs outs but then returns to the

demo mode. It is not at all detrimental to game play BUT AS

AN SOFTWARE DEVELOPER IT IS TOTALLY UNACCETPABLE!

My heart is broken.

My sincerest of appologies,

Steven Scavone, C.E.O. 3D Stooges Software

I don't think anyone is going to find fault with you for discovering for this bug and I doubt it would crop up very often during gameplay (especially if it was just now found). Fortunately the game is a CD release, so it's much cheaper to replace CDs than if GORF Classic had been a cartridge release. Still a pain in the neck for you, I'm sure, but I bet everyone will appreciate your coming forward with the problem as well as suspending sales until the bug is fixed and a new set of discs is made.

Listen here Gorfy and listen good!: I will be hearing no more of this apology s#*t from you as i know how much time and dedication your whole team put into this project, not to mention yourself! I for one will be keeping my copy (White or Blue, whichever arrives) and will be instead purchasing the cart version with the correction in place (hey, i was going to buy it anyway :D )!

To Gorf an his Team: THANK YOU!!!

Sorry to hear about this problem. :-(

Here is an idea how to provide the updates to the current customers

in a cost-effective way:

Create a "Gorf Classic Update"-CD,

send it to the current customers in a paper-sleeve

to get the cheapest shipping costs (or even

provide a CD-image online),

let the user boot this and then

ask to swap in the original GorfClassic-CD,

which then will be used to verify the use of the Update-CD

and also will avoid that the original GC-CDs will be given

away (ebayed).

Regards

Matthias

Matthias thats a top idea.

Think the disc swap booting solution could be a bit of a pain in the arse and increase dev time to do. But I concur that just sending out the fixed disc in a protected and cheap manner would be the best solution, the boxes/artwork arn't bugged afterall.

Then just produce the new discs for new orders.

This is what happened with the "Back in Time Live" DVD of the event, one of the discs came back from the duplicators as a disc of the disc image!! When the replacement discs were supplied to them (c64audio.com) Chris sent them out to the people that had bought the DVD.

So, what does this mean, exactly, to those of us who just paid for a copy but haven't received them? How long do you anticipate this bug-hunt to take?

I wanna play me some Gorf!!! :D

Go ahead and play...niether is harmfull in anyway...im just bummed they are

there. Your copy of Gorf will provide you with many hours of fun. There is no

crash, in fact the game operates normally immediatley after it occurs.

I know why it is happening and we are aleady in the process of fixing it.

what happens is if you get killed on you LAST ship and your missile

destroys the flagship right after you get hit, the game awards you a tons of

ship(not supposed to) but the game blanks for a moment and you go back to

demo mode(The game is over anyway). It only can happen on the FIRST flagship

mission (mission #5) What the real arcade machine does if this happens is, if you

have the extra ship dip(or option in the Jag version) it will kill your last ship, but

award you a new one. and you go around again untill you get killed. Gorf arcade

either awards you one extra ship after the first flagship destroyed ONLY, or not at

all.

I appreciate the understanding from everyone, I did'nt think anyone would fault

me.However I aim to set an example or high quality and real concern for the

Jag base. I dont know about the rest of you , but as a Jaguar fan and day one

owner, I already feel plenty ripped of by Atari for abandoning and not supporting

us.. The Jaguar is a long dead market but there is NO reason new games cant be

made at a reasonable price. Gorf Classic CD 's price was my highest concern after

the actual game content. I still aim to get you all (if intersted) a Gorf Classic Cart

version for under 60 dollars. It will have a few added features im working on as

we speak, like a REAL 90 degree rotated monitor mode to completely and totaly

capture Gorf dead on. It will also feature flip mode for those who may want to

build a cocktail version where the screen flips for each player. Oh and other

goods that you'll just have to find out for yourself.

Hello,

I sort of know how you feel, having released code and then found bugs,

but your release is so classy right through that I think the bug only makes

it more "real Atari" than anything else. ;) Nobody is perfect. My wife told

me that my Gorf arrived on Saturday, #30 of #50 thanks, I just wish that

I could play it, but work keeps me away from wife and kids, and Gorf too!

I really look forward to playing, and I'll for sure take a cartridge as well.

It's just great to see the release, and all the fans you've made so happy.

Cheers,

JustClaws.

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself, dude. Many released games have bugs that aren't found until some time later. Look at Pacman. No one knew about the bug on the 255th (or so, I can't remember now) key that rendered the game unplayable until years later. There's also the infamous Asteroids bug where on early machines you could hide out in the high score field and be invincible. There's also the Galaga bug that if done correctly makes it that the enemy ships cann't fire missiles at you. There are many others as well, some of which don't ever get fixed.

From rec.games:

What is the infamous Galaga bug ?

From : Marc Lumeyer (mlumeyer@nmsu.edu), here it is :

-- On either level 1 or 2 (it doesn't matter) let the last line of

"bees" enter the screen without shooting them.  Now, complete the

level, BUT DO NOT KILL THE 2 BEES ON THE LEFT OF THE SCREEN.

       i.e.               X     X     X    X               (picker-uppers)

                       xxx x x x xxx x x x x x x x         (red guys)

                     x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x       (bees)

                     x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x       (bees)

                     |

                     |

                      These two

Now, let these bees come down, and come down, and come down ...

After approx. 20 minutes, they'll stop firing at you.  Let them

go by a few times to make sure that they've stopped firing.

       Now kill them.....and     voila!!

NOBODY WILL FIRE AT YOU FOR THE REST OF THE GAME!!

I've racked up around 450,000 on a game where this worked, but I've

also wasted 20 minutes on a game where it didn't work.

It will work on some games and not on others.  (different chips??)

Note that some Galaga games have different copyright dates and may

have different romsets in them which may or may not negate this.

This bug will work on original machines and also works on the PS2 (and probably the Xbox and Gamecube; I cannot remember if this collection was released for those systems) Namco Museum version. It does not work on the 20th anniversary re-release of the arcade game or on any other versions of the game AFAIK.
