Artlover #26 Posted February 3, 2006 Ok, I tried both. I liked the 2600 version better. Sure, it looks kinda crappy, but given the limited resolution, I don't think it could have been done properly. Not to include such detail as the grid anyways.

Foxsolo2000 #28 Posted February 3, 2006 Has anyone also thought that the reason why some of these arcade ports were so poor was because they were rushed into production. Pac Man is a prime example of this for many say that it was rushed to catch the christmas market. Defender 2/Stargate showed what was capable if a little time and care was taken over it and many hacks and homebrews have shown the same thing with their versions of popular titles. Does anyone else agree or disagree?

The 2600 has some serious limitation, and some people were just better at getting around those than others. Tempest
NovaXpress #30 Posted February 4, 2006 And don't forget that 2600 programming progressed in small steps. Pac-Man was the first game to introduce dot-eating. Defender was the first game to scroll like that. Maybe games like Ms. Pac-Man and Stargate wouldn't have been as good without their predecesors? Look at how slow things moved. It was a big deal when david Crane figured out how to make smaller, more detailed numbers. Afterwards, everybody used the small numbers. The history of 2600 programming is a histroy of small advances which allowed for future innovation.
+Omegamatrix #31 Posted February 4, 2006 All this talk made me pull out my Solar Fox cart and have a go. I like this game a lot. Pac-Man just didn't have the speed or variety that this game has. Jr. Pac-Man on the other hand...

Vic George 2K3 #33 Posted February 4, 2006 Solar Fox was fun when I picked it up at a pawn shop during my 2600 game collecting days. But Pac-Man had more playing value to it.

Zonie #37 Posted February 6, 2006 Defender rocks. Sure Stargate was more true to original, but the pent-up frustration waiting for Defender at the time was part of the whole deal. The new Xbox and PS2 games have nothing on games like VCS defender, Missile Command, Asteroids, and Space Invaders. I played Defender so much that my friends and I built controllers for it. in 1981, it was one of the best games out there.

MegaManFan #40 Posted February 6, 2006 Arguably it was the first "maze type game" but I wouldn't call it the first Pac-Man type game. Pac-Man had a distinctive personality and a well-defined set of enemies. Let's put it this way - you can't really make a sequel to Dodge 'Em or a Dodge 'Em cartoon. NovaXpress #41 Posted February 6, 2006 I always think of Dodge 'Em as a driving game. It would seem that Pac-Man presents a whole lot of extra challenges for a programmer.

Chris-in-NJ #43 Posted February 7, 2006 I bought Solar Fox on eBay a few years ago, and can't get the hang of it. Everyone praises it to the skies, but I just can't get it. I find it frustrating and dull, personally. But then, I do tend to live a frustrating and dull life at times...
