Recycled
I've been on this board for a year now. I've seen the defense of E.T., Pac-Man, etc., but never Home Run. Any fanatics of this game? Does anybody prefer it over Pete Rose Baseball?
Foxsolo2000
Me and my wife loved to play it when we first got it but now we have moved on to better things
maibock
One must understand the subtle nuances of baseball to truly appreciate this game. It's not just throwing a ball and hitting said ball with a bat, there's a bit of magic coupled with mathematical congruences which capture the essence of the original game. Look deep my friend, look deep, this game has it all.. I actually enjoy the game - one player or two..
BassGuitari
I love Home Run. Charming little game.
+FujiSkunk
I still plug it in now and then. The amount of control the you have over the ball can make for plenty of amusement. You also have to give credit to a game that was not only the first video game of baseball, but also the first video game depicting violence in sports. Come on, admit that you've intentionally beaned a batter or two.
sku_u
I enjoy it. It's pretty good for such an early release.
HP Atari King of Michigan
A lot of people blast this game, but remember, this was before M Network came out with the more supperior Super Challenge Baseball and way before Pete Rose's Baseball. I personally think it's good (way better than either the Real Sports Baseball and the later Super Baseball).
doctorclu
I enjoy it. It's pretty good for such an early release. 1011432 Played it a lot as a kid. But then I don't play sports games much. But Home Run, Basketball (still like Basketball), now those were fun. Then Intellivision came along and made games with 5x more detail. So Atari made the Real Sports series. Real Sports Baseball replaced Home Run at that point. But weren't those early sports games just charming? maibock
But weren't those early sports games just charming? 1011437 Oh absolutely, and as you mentioned Basketball, still a fun 1v1 game today. Also Football, which takes equal abuse, is a fun little football game - simple yet there's strategic and fun game play..
+johnnywc
Ah - Homerun. This was the first game I played Christmas morning 1978 when we got our Atari. Very fond memories. The red and blue teams were, of course, the Red Sox vs. Yankees. GO SOX!!
8th lutz
I thought it was fun at first as kid. This was one of the first games I played on a home console. As time went by I considered it lame. When it was created though people have to understand that the 2600 games were not like they would be later on. Programmers didn't know any tricks yet like bankswitching yet. Games were 2k. I don't think you can do a good baseball game with all the details. Football came from the same year I think.
Inky
GO SOX!! 1011462 Ahh yes... In my experience, the blue team was the Good Guys, and the Red team was the Cardinals...
ZylonBane
Programmers didn't know any tricks yet like bankswitching yet. Bank switching isn't a programming trick. It's using hardware that's been designed to bank-switch... which didn't exist back then.
SteveW
My dad didn't like playing Atari games too much, but he and I occasionally played Home Run together. I'll always like the game, just for that reason.
sandmountainslim
I am also not a big fan of sports titles but Home Run has always been one that I enjoy (one of two, the other being Tecmo Bowl for NES), an early game but still alot of fun. Lord Helmet
I don't like it. Figures since baseball sucks in general
Cootster
It's a fun little 2-player game, although I always preferred handhelds for my video baseball action...until Baseball Stars came out for the NES, anyway. Way better than the original Football.
Prodos8
My brother and I liked it (Home Run) and we liked the football game too. At the time it was the only game in town. They were great for their time. Nowadays I really don't play sports titles much, except some Genny NHL '94 hockey now and then.
jetset
Sorry to go against the grain here. I thought the game sucked ass. Totally. Awesome art though on the box and manual.
Rob Mitchell
Sorry to go against the grain here. I thought the game sucked ass. Totally. Awesome art though on the box and manual. 1012332 Well when this game was released in 1978, the only baseball game to compare it to was the Midway Baseball in the arcades. So it was fun by home standards. Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
Recycled
Sorry to go against the grain here. I thought the game sucked ass. Totally. 1012332 So did I. Another crummy game I wasted my money on. I don't get why at that time I always bought the worst games. It amazes me today with all the great games that were out then...I picked up HR, Pac-Man, and Freeway. Anyway, HR gave George Plimpton amunition as well. supercat
I've been on this board for a year now. I've seen the defense of E.T., Pac-Man, etc., but never Home Run. Any fanatics of this game? Does anybody prefer it over Pete Rose Baseball? 1011418 Home Run was produced at a time when Atari games were all 2K and people hadn't yet learned all the tricks to making 2600 games efficient (actually, they still haven't learned ALL of them). Home Run was decent for its time, because there wasn't much to compare it to. I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas "Splatform" Jentzsch could do better in 1K, though. Student Driver
I played Home Run quite a bit when it was laying around and I was tired of shooting stationary "opponents" when no one could play Combat with me, but I always preferred Computer Baseball! for Odyssey^2. (Likewise, I preferred Pocket Billiards! over Imagic's Trick Shot.) My favorite of the early-ish Atari sports titles was Pele's Soccer. Something I always wondered: If Atari called their baseball game "Home Run," why didn't they call their football game "Touchdown?"
Vic George 2K3
I only played RealSports Baseball, and that was really wretched. Good graphics and interesting sound effects, but they don't really help the fact that I couldn't bat the ball most of the time it got pitched. Lord Thag
I'll play Airlock and Firefly before I touch home run. Ick...
