It's not just throwing a ball and hitting said ball with a bat, there's a bit of magic coupled with mathematical congruences which capture the essence of the original game. You also have to give credit to a game that was not only the first video game of baseball, but also the first video game depicting violence in sports. HP Atari King of Michigan Posted February 2, 2006 Share Posted February 2, 2006 A lot of people blast this game, but remember, this was before M Network came out with the more supperior Super Challenge Baseball and way before Pete Rose's Baseball. But then I don't play sports games much. But Home Run, Basketball (still like Basketball), now those were fun. Then Intellivision came along and made games with 5x more detail. So Atari made the Real Sports series. Real Sports Baseball replaced Home Run at that point. But weren't those early sports games just charming? 8th lutz Posted February 2, 2006 Share Posted February 2, 2006 I thought it was fun at first as kid. This was one of the first games I played on a home console. As time went by I considered it lame. When it was created though people have to understand that the 2600 games were not like they would be later on. Programmers didn't know any tricks yet like bankswitching yet. Games were 2k. Another crummy game I wasted my money on. I don't get why at that time I always bought the worst games. It amazes me today with all the great games that were out then...I picked up HR, Pac-Man, and Freeway. Anyway, HR gave George Plimpton amunition as well. Home Run was decent for its time, because there wasn't much to compare it to. I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas "Splatform" Jentzsch could do better in 1K, though. Student Driver Posted February 4, 2006 Share Posted February 4, 2006 I played Home Run quite a bit when it was laying around and I was tired of shooting stationary "opponents" when no one could play Combat with me, but I always preferred Computer Baseball! for Odyssey^2. (Likewise, I preferred Pocket Billiards! over Imagic's Trick Shot.) My favorite of the early-ish Atari sports titles was Pele's Soccer. Good graphics and interesting sound effects, but they don't really help the fact that I couldn't bat the ball most of the time it got pitched.
