gedwyn #1 Posted February 8, 2006 Hi. I have been an avid classic gamer since I was a kid and owned my first Atari in 1977. I actually own pretty much every system made from Fairchild to XBox 360. Anyway enough of that. I am really interested in the homebrew scene. I have always had an affinity for programming games especially for the C64 back in the day. My real interest will be the Atari 5200 since it was one of my favorite systems. I think it would be a blast to do something like this. My question to everybody here is how do I get started down this road. What do I need? Hardware? Software? and such. I know I am probably asking a lot but I really want to start doing this but do not know where to begin. By the way I love the site and I love most of the homebrews out there. Adventure II will be great. Thanks in advance. Paul

elviticus #4 Posted February 8, 2006 You might want to check the "programming" forum on this site for a start. There's sections on 2600 programming as well as 5200/8-bit. I know very little about it, but I've been trying to learn 8-bit assembly, which is probably the place to start. Look around the site some more and you'll also find info about how AtariAge can help you actually put together carts etc. if that's what you're asking. Anyway, you're right, it is a great site! Welcome.

Godzilla #9 Posted February 8, 2006 Well, first you need some large oak casks and some hops and some barley, and source of clean water and a lot of patience. Eventually, you'll get it right though. Just remember to homebrew responsibly and don't homebrew and drive!
bcprs1 #10 Posted February 8, 2006 Welcome to the board. Just to fill you in, a long time ago someone came on here boasting he was going to make a Night Rider game for the 2600. To make a long story short, he was all talk and no action.

MegaManFan #13 Posted February 10, 2006 Step one: turn on the stovetop. Step two: put a frying pan on the burner and grease it. Step three: shake up your instant pancake batter and... Oh wait! I thought you wanted to know how to make griddle cakes! Making homebrew games is much much harder. You really can't follow a recipe and most of all it's pretty unfathomable that you can just be "told" how to do it. Even when Andrew Davie tried to explain the techniques, it turned into a 38 part series. If you want to write homebrews when you can be told how to do it don't even start with the 2600. Try the built-in BASIC with the Commodore 64 and work your way up.
