help please: sound for a 5200 in Europe

Recommended Posts

I got my 5200 and have an image on a multistandard TV here in Europe

but no sound

does someone know why?

someone told me that maybe the oscillator in the power supply cadencing at 50hz here in europe instead of 60hz could be the problem

anyway if someone have any idea, that would be a big help

thanks

I can say with 99.9999% certainty that it's NOT the power frequency, as the 5200 power supply converts it to stable DC.

Possible that the sound hardware is damaged.

Or that your TV is looking in the wrong frequency for audio, but I'd think it would supprt US NTSC frequencies over any other region.

Have you tried both channels?(is it 2+3 for the 5200, or 3+4?)

Different regions use different frequency seperation for video and audio for analog VHF and UHF transmissions.

For example, PAL in Australia is different to PAL in the UK.

For a device using an A/V or S-Video cable, it isn't a problem. But for old hardware using an RF modulator, it can be a problem.

I would suggest try tuning the TV. If you can get audio but no or bad video, then I would suggest that is the case.

Best bet might be to do a 3.5mm audio output mod, or go the whole hog and do an A/V mod.

If the POKEY chip was stuffed, it would be a fair bet that the controller buttons would not function anyway (which would render the console kinda useless).

It's probably that the audio is tuned to a frequency your TV can't pick up. You can try re-tuning it (it's that tall red thing that pokes it head out the top of the RF shielding) but I suspect it doesn't have enough range. You will most likely have to add an additional inducter to the circuit to get it to work.

I'd think that if it's a multi-standard tuner that it would support US NTSC channels. While it COULD be tuned for Japanese or Columbian TV channel frequencies, the US ones are by far the most likely.

Rybags is right though. The best solution either way is do an AV mod. No mucking with RF at all.

...

Could probably tap the audio lines going into the RF modulator with clips and hook them to a headphone port. That would be a fast diagnostic maneuver.

My multistandard-TV is like that that too. In the on-screen menu I can only select various types of PAL and SECAM. But the TV will still display an NTSC picture through RF. Only for sound it expects the same carrier frequency as the selected PAL standard for the channel, which is different from the sound carrier frequency for NTSC.

I was able to get sound from my NTSC 2600 and 7800 consoles by tuning the sound carrier frequency like Mitch suggested. I think the sound carrier frequency for PAL-B is the closest to NTSC, so the range of the variable inductor might be big enough to get sound from your 5200. If it isn't, then you need add another inductor to the board like Mitch said.
