Flojomojo #1 Posted February 11, 2006 Why doesn't anyone make a nice 3D space blaster that isn't bogged down in scripted action sequences? I just discovered this nice little 3D space shooter for PC by the developers of Outpost Kaloki X. It reminds me of Battlesphere for the Jaguar. http://www.ninjabee.com/voidwar.html I left a whiny little plea for an XBLA 360 version as soon as possible. It would make my life complete. Check it out, it's neat. I'd love to play this one with 360 controls and online, voice-enabled multiplayer.
Dones #2 Posted February 13, 2006 Looks interesting. I'll try it out. Have you played Clash'n'Slash? It's a 2D asteroid-type game with lots of eye candy explosions.
JagFan422 #3 Posted February 14, 2006 Silpheed for Sega CD, greatest shoot em up ever in my opinion.
+FujiSkunk #4 Posted February 14, 2006 If they ever port Space Lords to a home console, I will be so all over it. No uninspired story with hack characters, no complex controls that require hours of "training sessions" to learn, and very little in the way of power-ups to keep track of. All you do is fly in and start blasting the bejeezus out of anything and everything.
ls650 #5 Posted February 14, 2006 I just discovered this nice little 3D space shooter for PC. It reminds me of Battlesphere for the Jaguar. http://www.ninjabee.com/voidwar.html Good question. I really like the simple gameplay of 8-bit Star Raiders; just "go ape" and clear all the bad guys out of the sector grid. More recent space combat sims have really great graphics, but these long elaborate storylines with very specific missions to perform. I just want something where you dogfight with bad guys and blow stuff up. BattleSphere is about the only game I've found that's what I'm looking for: an updated version of Star Raiders. I downloaded that Void Wars demo and played it for about 20 minutes last night. It seems interesting; I'll have to play it some more, though I'd say it's less BattleSphere/Star Raiders and more Space War 2000...
ls650 #6 Posted February 27, 2006 (edited) I played with Void War some. It has two modes of play: a storyline or a BattleSphere-style arena; think of the old PDP Space War game in 1st-person mode. I found the storyline mode had a lot of long, boring cutscenes that couldn't be skipped. The arena mode is intersting, but I found that it's difficult because heaps of ships are thrown at you without any option for scaling the difficulty. ------------------------------------------------- Speaking of space sims... There used to be a 3D space fighter sim called "SabreWing 2" available. The screenshots made it look pretty good; it's your typical Wing Commander-type game. I found it available for download on www.download.com http://www.download.com/SabreWing-2/3640-7...3.html?sb=3&v=1 but after installation it wouldn't run. The game is no longer supported, but I wrote an email to the distributor to ask if there is a sequel planned. I was told that this game requires Microsoft VJM (Virtual Java Machine) and was given an address for downloading VJM... http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/msjavx86_3805.exe As soon as I installed Microsoft Java and rebooted, this old SabreWing 2 demo worked perfectly! I've spent some time playing around with it... It's actually a decent game. Nice graphics, and it's fast, even on my old Pentium III-500. Although it supports keyboard and mouse, it works great with my 2-axis joypad. Unfortunately the demo only has two missions available, and the distributor has no plans for any more releases. Too bad... Edited February 27, 2006 by ls650
bowser724 #7 Posted February 27, 2006 Rebel Assault II for PC or PlayStation. With invulnerability mode on the whole game will almost finish by itself without you touching the PC, because it's a rail shooter. Same with Deadly Tide.
MiniMoose64 #8 Posted October 20, 2007 Jupiter Strike for the PSX by Acclaim is the best in my opinion.
mos6507 #9 Posted October 20, 2007 I think the gold standard is Freespace 2, but that's still mission-based which sucks. Most games in this genre try to pile on a ton of Elite style privateering elements which I've never really gotten into.
