I know there are tons more Classic Systems out there but these two are the "Big Daddies" of the lot, which one do you believe holds the most nostalgia and is dearest to the publics heart?

To be honest, I don't think of it as nostalgia. A game is a game, and if a old game is better than a new game, I'll play it.

There is no nostalgia for me with the 2600. I've been playing it a lot longer as an adult (on and off from 1992-present) than I did as a kid (1981-1984.)

I still voted for the 2600. My NES sits in my brother's basement, collecting dust. I liked some of the games for it, but the problems with loading cartridges just put me off the system for good. I know there are top loaders, but they aren't worth the money. And I know of collectors who have NES's with new connectors and that still didn't fix the problem. It kept me away from Nintendo hardware too. I still have never played a Super Nintendo. Though I couldn't resist picking up a $10 N64 at a flea market a few years ago.

I love both dearly but the VCS is the king of consoles and always will be.

I think the nes has more nostalgia to the public. There were more people playing video games in the nes era. There is womens underwear that has the nes konami code. I found that out on dp. I don't have any and have no plans to. It was on a website. I wouldn't of know otherwise. There also is your know your roots t-shirt with nes. The 2600 only has the flashback and the atari logo. People that were born my brother and I's time period is more likely to get their start on gameing on computers or the nes in the united states. The time period was in being born was in the late 70's to early 80's. Now I granted I got my start trying the 2600 Jr,7800 and the intellivision 2. I had memories with booth and I thought booth were good systems. I don't think many people had a 2600 from the time period I was born because the crash began and there was chance that they might have played a colecovision, intellivision,5200, or on a computer untill the nes came.

It's my poll and I will be honest and admit that I havent voted yet :? I like both systems and play them equally, VCS is very nostalgic to me as it was the first system I owned (and first I ever wanted) in the early 80's but the NES was a big part of my teen years and it always brings memories of high school days to mind. HARD to choose!

I had to vote VCS, since I didn't actually own an NES as a kid (although I do have lots of fond memories of playing it at friends' houses until 2 AM on the weekends in high school).

I have to admit it makes me feel like a bit of an old fart that I get so resentful of these early 20-somethings wearing their "roots" T-shirts with NES controllers or SMB-era Mario on them. PUNKS!

2600 is pure kiddy time to me. And by that I mean when I was an 8 year old asking my mom to find me "Space Invaders" to the time I was 14 and playing Baseball.

NES/Famicom is more of a college memory. And by that I mean being 18-20 years old getting drunk with a bunch of guys sitting around playing Tyson's Punch Out while sticking my hands down my girlfriends pants.

I tend to get more nostalgic about the childhood stuff since the college memories still feel like the same timeframe as now (if that makes any sense). In other words NES to me, is of the same timeframe as the Xbox 360. Maybe because my current mindset was already developed more or less by the time the NES came out

2600 however is of a lost place in time I'll never get back to.. So it's 2600/5200 for nostalgia for me :D

I can't vote on it. I absolutely hate the NES now, as I can't get it to work fully reliably even after cleaning with alcohol and compressed air, and storing all my games in ziplock bags. On top of that, I can't get into collecting for it because everyone charges inflated prices for the games worth having and everything else is, well, not worth having. However, I still can't hear the SMB music or the Legend of Zelda music without getting hit with a hugh nostalga wave.

However, just seeing a 2600 controller makes me start needing to play some Ms. Pacman or Solar Fox.

If the vote is nostalgia, then VCS. Although its a tough call, I have a lot of nostalgia for both.

I first played the VCS in 78 My cousin brought his over and his carts The original boxes and his heavy sixer OH how I wish I had his setup now

I finally got one in 79 and was thrilled My parents said I could have 1 cart a week starting with one on the day we got the 1st VCS Human Cannon ball

I still get the feeling of nostalgia I have an ol RCA 19" tv from 84 (Bought new back then) and when I want to feel like im back in a time that was simpler just school homework and Atari. I pop in Human Cannonball play a little Look out the window to the sky and still say "Thanks Mom and Dad" (they are both long since passed)

Memories of Dad and I play Video Pinball and Space Invaders into the wee hours of the night ...... I really miss those simpler fun times and playing a few rounds of Video Pinball with dad.

I wasn't into the VCS much during the pre-NES era (I was a ColecoVision fan for the most part), and the NES introduced me to my two beloved game series: Mega Man and Metroid! :D

So my vote goes to the NES. :P

I don't get it... the question is which one the public likes more, but the answers are all personal preference... I R CONFUZZLED!

The 2600 started it all. Yes there were 'consoles' before it, but it was the one that made video games a household name, and something every kid (and many adults) had to own.

When the NES came out I already owned a c64, so I had already seen games advanced beyond the 2600's brickish looks and bleepy noises; I don't think there's anything insanely revolutionary about it.

Besides, I was a fan of the SMS and believed it should have held the NES's crown in the US but was screwed by Nintendo's monopolistic licensing; the 7800 was probably screwed by the same practices to some extent.

In that case: NES. People love the 2600, but more people associat the NES with games now. I had a presentation last year where I made the slide transition sounds SMB sounds (it was a presentation on violence in videogames) and people would randomly shout out what the sound was to try to guess it before the rest of the class. I don't think you'll find another system where a class of Psycholgy Masters students are all capable of recognizing what part of one game certain sound clips come fom. If I'd used 2600 sounds, I bet people would have gotten Pac-Man and maybe missle command, and that's about it.

In the public's eye, there's no question. NES wins.

Not in this country. The NES was never a massive success in Britain so it would be The 2600 hands down. Everyone i've ever met knows what the Atari 2600 is.

Personal preference is exatly what the public likes more. I don't see how you can be confuzzilized. :?

Of course, we're on an Atari board. Post the question on an NES forum and see how the voting goes.

It's damn close though. There hasn't been a console like either since. Both were revolutionary, and both have as strong a following today as they did back then.

that said...gotta go with the 2600.

I am too. I understand the members who voted the 2600 in who lived in europe and a few other places. The nes was not popular in Europe. At the time time to my understanding that Nintendo don't do much advertising in europe and didn't have the 3d party monoply overseas. In europe during during the nes era, computers were more pupular then console gaming. I found that part out on the internet a long time ago. Over there if there if this poll had the sega master system included it would've made sense. The master system was popular over there and it sold much better over there then the nes. That sms over there had game support through end of 1995 I think.

Hmm, it's strange to me that people have so much trouble with their NES. I've never had any trouble with mine, but my Ataris have brought me much grief. I guess it's a luck of the draw kind of thing.

To me, NES seems to be superior in just about every way. Atari maybe has it beat on replay value, but NES just had a better overall presentation. They were much better on the business end, had a better looking console, more reliable controllers, and a much more diverse game library. I don't know, maybe it's just because the NES came out when I was a kid, but to me it totally wins.

8th Lutz you are right the Sega Master System did very well in Europe and was widely supported by 3rd parties. The NES was pushed quite heavily but never took off mainly because it was seen as being 'childish' all the other machines had loads of fighting games and shooters and the NES had Mario games and some pretty lame sports titles.

Think of this for a second... If you posted the same poll on a Nintendo site like Nesworld, what would the results of the poll be? I really think that whatever the results of the poll on atariage are, they are irrelevant to the general population.

Personal preference and public opinion AREN'T the same thing, as one is an individual viewpoint and another is a societal aggregate.

While I do acknowledge that AtariAge tends to favor, well, Atari, I also recognize that it IS biased and is in no way representative of the public as a whole, which is what the question asks about.

I just thought that the people at AtariAge weren't completely unaware of which system has people spending twenty bucks on dirt-common games 2 decades later.
