Cakewalk Prototype or Selfmade?

Hello, I get today a very strange game, Cakewalk. I have buy this as Prototype, but I and some more german Fans are not sure about this. Most mean this is selfmade, because it look so strange.

So I will ask here, if someone has ever see a Prototype from CommaVid?

And how they look like?

I have scan too the board inside, just click on Front or Back.

 

Maybe this is only selfmade, but I will know what other mean, like Tempest (The Master of Prototypes ).

 

I have scan the Front with white paper over the EPROM, but this is a EPROM on a sockle.

That definetly looks homemade. While I've never seen a Commavid prototype, I'd guess they'd be in a regular case with a plain white label. That cart is neat looking though.

Wow, I have to laugh looking at that board. I remember this eBay auction and forgot that you had won it. I highly doubt that's a genuine protototype. Looks like someone created their own board and stuck it in a small project case.

Looks like it was made with an board etching kit. Probably self made, but it looks pretty old. It's really cool whatever it is!

I have not really won it. All other have cancel there bids (they have all think its selfmade, don't know why ), and then the seller has close the auction. But I have ask him, and have get it for a middle price. A bit to high, but it look funny at all.

 

I love coriouse games.

I wasn't faulting you for purchasing what is most likely not a legitimate prototype. Especially since you got it for what I assume is a reasonable price. It's something I'd also buy, just for curiosity's sake. And I'm glad you put pictures online so we could get a better look at it!

Hey Matty!

 

Congrats on picking up a Cakewalk cart, in any form. It's a great game.

 

If you don't have instructions for Cakewalk and you are relying on the HTML copy posted on AtariAge, here's a heads up. The text formatting of the Game Features matrix in the online manual is all screwy. You can't tell which columns the the x's are supposed to go in. Luckily, I ran into another collector just yesterday who showed me his Cakewalk game instructions manual (Thanks, Rick!). I now know that the Game Features matrix is supposed to look like this:

Hi Matty,

 

Weird cart indeed. I too doubt it's real. Thing is, I have what appears to be some type of Cakewalk loaner cart. As Tempest suggests, it comes in a regular Commavid case with a generic white label. The label says that "this game will be replaced by a defenitve copy when completed". There's an error on the label btw, the game is called Calkwalk

it was a strange auction indeed, i'm glad you didn't pay that much at the end. you nearly won it for a dollar ...

 

 

main problem on that auction was that the picture of the internal board was posted days after the auction started, and the highest bid was allready 77 euros/$.

 

then one after the other we retracted our bids ...

 

you defenitely have a unique item now

Well I did see Rush Hour at CES but I honestly don't remember what the cartridge looked like.

 

I was on the press release list for Commavid, but they only sent me finished games along with boxes and instructions.

Did you see it playing, or just the cart? I'd always pictured some kind of car combat game for that one, and really wished it had been released...

I played it. Hre's my description of it from ABC To The VCS:

 

"In Rush Hour (Commavid), your car races across a horizontal five lane highway. Although your car can shoot down other cars on the road to clear the way, you cannot get rid of debris. If you come across debris, or approaching cars, you must quickly change lanes to avoid a collision. However, you must be traveling at a considerable pace to change lanes."

I did play it but I don't remember too much about it. I do remember that I liked it and was very disappointed because it never came out.
