Best NES light gun games?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the NES thing (just got a Yobo), so I'd like to know what some good NES light gun games are. I already have Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley, but those 2 are pretty much games that every person with a NES and light gun has. Anybody got some ideas?

Freedom Force

Wild Gunman

Gotcha!

Hogan's Alley

Duck Hunt

Gumshoe

---*a bit odd on this one though

it's a platformer game where you

control the character with the zapper.

That's all that comes to mind though.

Gunshoe is the most different of the lot, becasue you aren't just shooting at stuff. Everything else is pretty much a target practice game.

Other than the ones you mentioned though, I'd recommend Shooting Range, Barker Bill's Trick Shooting, and Mechanized Attack. The first 2 have som neat levels and cool variety and Mechanized is a war game not too distant from Operation Wolf (which also uses the gun) but it's SNK and I just like it better

I never could figure out how those light guns work anyway. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the gun is recording the color of the TV pixels where it "shoots" but this is pure uneducated speculation :D

but to answer the question, Duck hunt is the only one I ever played, so I guess it wins for me.

I used to play a cool game called Capone on my Amiga and enjoyed it alot because of its changing environment. But to play, I didnt have a gun, I simply hovered the mouse curser over the guy I wanted to shoot. I also had a game called POW, but dont remember playing it as much.

If you not put off by blood and gore, Chiller is pretty good. It suffers a little in the graphics department but its great fun and if you have two Zappers you can play similtaneously with a friend.

I know.

The first detection method, used by the Zapper, involves drawing each target sequentially in white light after the screen blacks out. The computer knows that if the diode detects light as it is drawing a square (or after the screen refreshes), that is the target the gun is pointed at. Essentially, the diode tells the computer whether or not you hit something, and for n objects, the sequence of the drawing of the targets tell the computer which target you hit after 1 + ceil(log2(n)) refreshes (one way to determine if any target at all was hit and ceil(log2(n)) to do a binary search (binary search: in computer science, binary search is a search algorithm for searching a set of sorted...

An interesting side effect of this is that on poorly designed games, often a player can point the gun at a light bulb, pull the trigger and hit the first target every time. Better games account for this by not using the first target for anything.

hehe

Gumshoe is my favorite. And it's pretty challenging, too. It's not something that you'll fly through in one go.

Yep. To this day I haven't been able to play the game for

more than 10 minutes if that. Not because I hate it, but

because it's so danged hard to do everything that needs

to be done.

:ahoy:

Chiller gets a bad wrap alot but it is a pretty good gun game for being a no name 3rd party release. And I must say all the gun games are great, but then agian the light gun is my favorite controller for any system.

I must agree, the light gun is my favorite controller. I first used one back in the late 70's with a pong machine with a target shooting game that used, you guessed, a light gun. Sadly, though, nowadays it seems to be used very little and also a victim of PC. In fact, a clerk at Wal-Mart said they don't evey carry light guns anymore, because of political correctness. I replied, you carry real guns but not light guns? And he said yes.

Another vote for Gumshoe - that game rocked. There was also a paintball game by, I think LJN, that was actually well done and pretty fun. You moved left/right with the dpad in one hand, and shot with the other.

Chiller is one of the best Zapper games, but it is kind of a "dark title" as far as the story line. One the best Zapper games is Baby Boomer by Color Dreams. It's going to cost about $15-$20 on eBay, but it's one of the most fun Zapper games out there. The storyline is simple and the game play is really fun.

If you can grab an emulator from somewhere (like FCE Ultra), then give it a try. Even with a mouse and emulator, it's fun to play.

Rescue Mission and Safari Hunt are really good. Oh, wait, we're talking about NES zapper games. Ewwwww, that's just gross.

I can't reccomend Wild Gunman, Duckhunt, or Hogan's Alley, because they suck. Wildgunman may eventually prove useful as a test of boredom thresholds in a psychology experiment, as you will never ever ever lose. I can reccomend Chiller, which I played as a kid and loved (of course, I liked duck hunt once too).

I love ALL zapper games, probably the only reason I got an SMS is that they had lightgun games too. And the SMS ones are indeed better for those of you who like gun games but maybe haven't tried the SMS ones.

I only recently discovered 'Gotcha! the Video Game' and it's tons of fun. As somebody mentioned above, one player controls the movement of the character with the control pad while the other controls the shooting with the Zapper. The game is a capture the flag paintball game and the "story" is (apparently) based on an 80's movie titled... 'Gotcha! the Movie' ...althought I've never seen it.It's great fun at video game parties. I recommend picking it up. I got it for $5 at a second hand shop and it was well worth it.

the light gun levels of Bayou Billy are a lot of fun.

Too bad Punisher wasn't a light gun game... :(

I think the appropo question is "Was there any bad gun games?" for the NES. I've yet to run into one.
