Wolf9545 #1 Posted March 2, 2006 I have been looking around online and saw a thing called the "supercharger". Where can I get more info about this device? I did see a picture of it and it looks like you just plug it into your 2600 like any other cartridge and plug a cable into something else. Does the supercharger need to be powered? What is the other device i plug it in to? Also, about how much do they go for? It looks very interesting.

vdub_bobby #4 Posted March 2, 2006 You can find the roms online; use Google. I imagine you could burn them to a CD; you'd have to convert the binary images to WAV first, though.
jaybird3rd #5 Posted March 2, 2006 Can I get these games online? Is there a way to burn them to a cd?1027116 Look around for a CD called "Stella Gets a New Brain"; it contains the entire Starpath Supercharger library and a bunch of other goodies. The games are on the CD as audio tracks and can be played into a real Supercharger just like the original cassettes.

StanJr #7 Posted March 2, 2006 you should be able to round one up for around $35 if you look and are patient. Impatience will probably cost you an additional $20. I have owned two over the years and never paid more than $35 for either. They are wonderful to have and feature some of the best games for the VCS!!! Foxsolo2000 #8 Posted March 2, 2006 All I will add is that it varies. You could get one for as low as $10 or pay premium prices for one on Ebay. It all depends on how much someone else wants to fight you for one
Red 5 #9 Posted March 2, 2006 Getting a supercharger for 'Escape From the Mindmaster' and 'Dragonstomper' is reason enough to get one. As stated before, get yourself the 'Stella gets a new brain" CD and you will instantly have the complete Starpath / Arcadia game collection. It is also possible to convert atari ROM images to wave files and burn them to a CD. Then just load your favorite game onto your supercharger with any CD player that has a headphone jack. Not all games work, but most of them do.
D.Yancey #10 Posted March 2, 2006 a huge amount of info and tools can be found here for the Supercharger. It can also be modified to play all 2600 2K and 4K roms. http://members.cox.net/rcolbert/
shadow460 #11 Posted March 3, 2006 The Supercharger is kinda like a 32X, except that the Supercharger doesn't suck. Really, though, it allows better games (in theory) to be played on the 2600. It means better graphics, more stages, and less cost (back in the day). I've owned two--the first one was given to me with the first ten Starpath games, and I purchased the second one for $40. TheRealRed recommended two good titles. These two and Phaser Patrol absolutely stand out in the 2600 library, and the rest of Starpath's titles are still very good. Dragonstomper is the best of their lineup (my favorite is Escape from the MindMaster, though), and Killer Satellites is the worst, even though it is still a good game. Be aware that the games are still copyrighted. Unlike most other 2600 ROMs which are public domain, the Starpath copyright has changed hands, and it is still active. If I get a supercharger I think I might try the mod to be able to play all the games. I just hate to destroy something like that just to be able to play all 2600 games on the unit. It would be cool though.

A.J. Franzman #14 Posted March 3, 2006 (edited) Be aware that the games are still copyrighted. Unlike most other 2600 ROMs which are public domain, the Starpath copyright has changed hands, and it is still active. 1027275 Where did you get the idea that most Atari 2600 ROMs are public domain? I believe copyright protections (currently?) last for 75 years from the date of creation in the case of corporate copyrights, or 75 years from the death of the author in the case of individual copyrights. In order for a protected work to become public domain, it must be *explicitly* released. A few 2600 ROMs have been made freely distributable, or freely available from a specific source or sources, but these are not the same as public domain. Perhaps some other 2600 ROM copyrights are not currently enforced by their owners, but this is not the same as public domain either - there is presently no recognized legal concept of "abandonware", despite what you may read to the contrary on dozens or hundreds of "warez" websites. I challenge you to identify more than 50 2600 ROMs that are public domain, and cite your sources for proof (note that this is less than 10% of all the available titles so does not even come close to your "most" claim). Just because it's on a website (even this one!) does not make it "public domain". Edited March 3, 2006 by A.J. Franzman

So ya, I don' t have a supercharger any more..lol.., couldn't resist that big and that quick of a turn about and I'm not big on the SC anyhow. But fox is rigth somtimes they are dirt cheap and other times they are worth their weight in gold, price fluxuates WAY too much on the supercharger, but if you find one for $25ish dont pass it up. Well, if someone sells me something for an obvious friendship price then I wouldn't feel fair making a profit from his discount. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, the Supercharger is a great piece of hardware, which (after some pretty simple modding) will allow you to play all 4K and smaller ROMs on the real thing! These will NOT be produced again. If you want a 2600 cart that you can load games into, you want either the Krocodile Cart (for 2600) or the Cuttle Cart 2 (for 7800). Or the SC, of course. mos6507 #19 Posted March 15, 2006 Delicon and I have been putting together an a modern alternative to the Supercharger called Chimera. When it comes out, we hope to sell it below the market price of used Superchargers, and it will be a lot easier to just order this than waiting for a Supercharger to show up periodically on Ebay. It will also have a lot more features than the Supercharger, including enough built-in flash memory to store the entire catalog internally at once for instantaneous loads. We currently have all the Supercharger games including multiloaders working reliably on our prototype boards. We just need to build out a menuing system and add our new proprietary features to it. You can follow the progress on my blog page. http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...blog&blogid=
