Hi there,

I need your help. I've got potentially 2 renditions of a title screen and I can't decide which one to use. If given the choice of A or B which one would you choose and why?

Thanks for looking.

I had to read the other people's comments to even notice the differences. *Whew... too much parenting for one night...*

But after reading the comments and realizing what was different, I agree, B is better.

Nice title screen we need a final FULLY version of Pac-man for the 2600! :D

B. The letters are more in proportion with each other. Although the lips on Pac-Man look a little strange in either version.

Call me a dude.. but I had a very hard time seeing any difference. It's just the letters right? Anyway.. I chose b. :)

If the ghosts in A were more centered under the logo (2 pixels to the right maybe) I would vote for A. Otherwise I vote for B.

I say take the Pac-Man from #B, put it in #A, and use the extra space to separate the "P" and "A" by another pixel (like in #B).

I.e., I really like the "M" and "N" in #A, but Pac-Man looks better in #B, and having the "P" and "A" crammed together in #A looks worse.

How about this 76-pixel version?

Note that P=playfield, 1=missile 1, 2=missile 2, and B=Ball. Players positioned as shown (second line) and do not move.VBLANK should be turned on just to the left of the P, and precisely at the right of the N. If you wish to make the "N" one pixel narrower, move everything four pixels to the right but add one cycle to when you turn off VBLANK; it will then switch after the third pixel of the last playfield bit.

I would assume that Dennis can center the text in A and vote accordingly. Then you're really just voting on the Pac-Man text.

Now thanks to supercat there is a third logo to consider. :ponder:

It does look as if Pac-Man has had collagen lip implants.

I could reduce the size of "M" in A a bit. Would that work for you?

How about this 76-pixel version?

 I'll try to get a mock-up soon to see what it looks like on the TV.

Yeah, I didn't center them correctly for this post. I was trying to get a feel to which "Pacman" looked better. I added the ghost names to give a psuedo look to how the screen would be.

Here's a 52 pixel wide version I came up with:

pac-man-title.gif

The red drop shadow is also 52 pixels, but it's offset to the right one pixel.

That looks great, Nathan. It'll take some creativity to shift the shadow by 1 pixel. It's not as trivial as moving a 48 pixel sprite.

As long as we are considering alternatives to the first 2, the Pacman logo is a good candidate for 56 pixels using a method conceived by supercat. The restriction is that you can not have the following patterns in the leftmost and rightmost 4 pixels:

X-X-

-XX-

-X-X

-X--

--X-

Nor can you have the following in the leftmost and rightmost 5:

X---X

Of course, someone would have to code it. :ponder:

Ooh, shiny. Let's run with that...

In the immortal words of Calculon-- I don't care for the font. Looks like it tries to emulate certain characteristics of the arcade font at the expense of legibility and consistency (mostly in the area of stroke width). I've cleaned that up a bit, and fixed the justification to match the arcade version.

Also, I never liked the Space-Invader look of the ghosts in the Atari 800 version of Pac-Man, so I hope Debro doesn't reproduce that. IMHO, all the visual character of the ghosts is in their big googly eyes.

You mean the font used for the ghost names, correct?

Yikes! You are going for the title screen too? It's gonna rock, kids

Anyway, I vote B unless the shadowed C is a new candidate.

I wish I hadn't voted so early on; the new ones look better (hides face because of choice "A")...

I went ahead and converted supercat's idea to graphics. The M is slightly modified.

If you look at the original Pac-Man marquee though, the dot in the center of the "P" should be much smaller.
