Captian Beeble 5200 issues

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

The attached is a BIN of the 800 to 5200 translation of Captian Beeble.

It plays fine in an EMU but on real hardware it runs fine and does the demo and all but the game won't start no matter what button you press to try to get it to go. It's almost like the controller isn't even being recignized, and no my controllers are not broke..lol.. Anyone know why it won't work on real hardware? I got a 2 port 5200 if that makes any dif.

Also the conversion of Tapper works but you can't move your guy down for some reason??

Well, I believe Kenfused did this conversion, so maybe he would know for sure, but I see a couple of possible issues:

1. In the 8-bit computers, I believe starting a game ocurred through hardware triggers in the GTIA/CTIA chip while in the 5200 this ocurred through keyboard interupts in the Pokey chip.

2. In Pokey, keyboard scanning occurs at a cetain frequency. In the emulator I am devolping for the 5200 I approximate this scanning to be a key per scanline. I can't remember what atari800 is doing but it may the same. This is not exact, so it may create a problem. Also, the rate of keyboard interupts could be an issue.

All in all, it could simply be a timing issue that happens to work in the emulators but not in the real thing. It works in my emulator, I know that.

As far as Tapper goes, I have no problem in my emulator. As a recall, it plays fine in the real thing as well but I will have to try it out again to confirm.
