PAL/NTSC Colecovision/Intellivision question

Recommended Posts

Okay, this may be a dumb question, but are Colecovision and Intellivision cartridges TV format specific (PAL/NTSC) like Atari or not?

All of my Atari cartridges are specifically PAL but there is no mention of format on any of my Intellivision and Colecovision carts.

This leads on to my wondering if the new CV 128-In-One cart will work on my CV console (which is definitely PAL) and therefore if ROM images are not format specific?

Colecovision: no, Intellivision: probably not

The one potential issue with the Coleco is for games which do not check the frame rate. There is a specific byte in low ROM which is set to either 50 or 60 depending on the frame rate of the unit, or the game could run a counting loop between vertical blanks to determine the frame rate. This can cause NTSC games to run 16% slower, or PAL games to run 20% faster.

Intellivision carts are region free. A lot of US collectors pick up Super Cobra and Tutankham from Europe. The games were super rare in the US but just very rare across the pond.

Actually to the best of my knowledge they were never released in the US. At least I've never seen proof of a US copy. All the copies I've seen have a multi-lingual manual which would mean they were meant for overseas.

You're probably right, I was going from memory.
