Got a working Dreamcast for $3.00 today

Recommended Posts

I was at a fleamarket today and a lady had a dreamcast she didnt have the a/v cables for it and she wasnt sure if it worked but she didnt think it did. So since she only wanted $3 i took a chance on it. I found an old dreamcast r/f in a box of junk that had from years ago and hooked the dreamcast up and it works! The only problem with it is the power button wouldnt stay down. But i fixed that in about 2 minutes. So i guess i'll get some dreamcast games? When i had a dreamcast back in the day i loved playing racing games on it text drive 6 crazy taxi come to mind. Are there any other good racing games for the system??

Not too shabby! Three dollars is a great deal for one of the best game systems of all time.

As for great racing games, well... Crazy Taxi is probably the best you're going to do on that system. Project Gotham Racing got its start on the Dreamcast, but was known on that system as Metropolis Street Racing. It's not as fun as the PGR games, though... the controls are rather stiff, and the night racing mode (where you'll see more red and black than in your average Virtual Boy release) will drive you stark raving mad.

Wait, wait, there IS one pretty sweet arcade-style racing game that you absolutely must have. Midway's Hydro Thunder looks amazing, even by today's elevated standards, and the gameplay is challenging and addictive. People also speak highly of the cel-shaded kart racers, including Wacky Races (based on the campy Hanna-Barbera cartoon) and Looney Tunes: Space Race.

The Dreamcast also had the best version of Acclaim's Re-Volt, a racing game featuring tiny radio-controlled cars. Tokyo Extreme Racer was all right for the time, but still kind of boring. It's a game you'll either love or hate, and these days, most people are in the latter camp (if the reviews of the recent PSP version, Street Supremacy, are any indication).

Stay away from Test Drive 6 and LJN's Rectum Opus, Spirit of Speed: 1937. It's a period racing game, set just before the second World War. If competing against Ford Model Ts and other sluggish antiques sounds at all exciting to you, well... don't buy this anyway.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre but I've had some fun with 2049...I prefer kart racers but this seemd to offer less forgiving/cheating racing, with courses w/ tons of hidden things to find. Plus a good "death match" head to head mode, and an interesting stunt mode (these cars have extendable assist wings for help with jumps and stunts)

Hydro Thunder, Daytona USA and 2001l, Sega Rally 2, and Star Wars: Episode One are some good racers. Vigilante 8:2nd Offense on DC is still my favorite vehicle combat game.

And burn yourself some emulator discs. I just wish there was a SNES emulator that was both good (like DreamSNES) and didn't slow down with sound turned on. Which is why I'm working on modding a broken xbox. (bad BIOS, ordered a chip, will get it next week)

Amen to that. One of my favorites too, along with Star Wars: Demolition (by the same publisher).

Stay away from POD if you can, unless you pick it up for a dollar or something. It's not very good. Speed Devils and it's online sequel are fairly decent. I haven't played Roadsters, but i've read reviews from back in the day that say that it's fairly bad.

SF Rush 2049 was a fun game. It's recommended. Like it's been said, it's got lots of great tracks with lots of hidden areas and unlockables, the stunt mode is great, and the 2-player combat mode is really, really fun.

Racing games I recommend.

Speed Devils

Test Drive V-Rally

Test Drive Le Mans

F355 Challenge

Hydro Thunder

Metropolis Street Racer

Don't count Crazy Taxi really, but if you loved it, it has a sequel on the console. Avoid Monaco Grand Prix and F1 World Grand Prix, didn't seem very realistic though I haven't tried them with my wheel before, which could improve them. CART Flag to Flag sucks as well beyond nice graphics and some great road courses and cars, but it has terrible AI, physics, and grass that ruins stuff like Mid-Ohio when it slows you down to 5mph when you touch it. Hated Sega GT, Sega Rally 2, and Daytona USA 2, but if you like Sega racers, they may be something you'd enjoy (Very poor handling, wasn't fun at all).

Demolition Racer: No Exit. It's the closest you'll get to Burnout on the Dreamcast, and it's close enough.

If memory serves, combat went up to the full 4 players, right?

The more the merrier in that kind of game, fo sho!

I have an older version of NesterDC. It is great, though the UI is a little clunky (not sure if its been improved)

I do have to say, I wish they had kind of sectioned off the hack files somewhere else. How many half-assed graphical hack jobs of SMB do w really need?

I would assume it would do four players. I only played it with two players, when my brother would come over. We'd spend hours on that one!

I bought a black Sports Pack Dreamcast from a flea market for $20, with around 20 games with it (no jewel cases, just loose  ). I bought it mainly because there were two games in the stack that I wanted, and they were worth around $20 anyway. I love deals like that.

Rush 2049 is great, as is Hydro Thunder and Gauntlet Legends. Ready 2 Rumble is cute as well.

Soul Calibur, of course.

The Sega arcade ports! Crazy Taxi, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Fighting Vipers, Virtual On Oratorio Tangram, Sega Rally 2, Daytona 2001, House of the Dead 2, Virtua Tennis!

Capcom games!

And of course, all the emulators. www.dcemulation.com

You say you want racing games? MSR is definitely the best in my opinion. Tokyo Street Racer or whatever it was called here (I have the "Shutoku Battle" version) is also one-of-a-kind. And don't forget the Ferrari game. Sim City for driving.

I also got Rush 2049 from a pawn shope but my dreamcast wont play it. It has some scratches on it. I also have Demolition Racer on the way i picked it up on ebay. By the way is there a light gun for the dreamcast?? For games like House of the Dead 2 and Virtual Cop 2 on sega smach pack??? I think there is but im not sure?

Yep, another rave review for Hydro Thunder. Single player rocks, multiplayer sucks. It's very much worth getting.

Also try to seek out Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, as that is one very awesome fighting game.

My other recommendations are Sega Bass Fishing and Flag to Flag.

1998 Sega Rally Championship is best enjoyed on a PC.

On a similar note, I was given a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP graphics card that the person said didn't work. He hadn't hooked it up correctly. I have two of them, so I knew how to hook it up.

It works like a champ for older games like 98 Sega Rally and Jedi Knight 2 (yes, it is fully compatible with JK2).
