Callipygous #1 Posted December 10, 2001 Found this article Sick and Twisted The premise is that old games don't have enough Blood or Boobs to get approved if they were proposed today. What do you think? Would Pac-man, Qbert, Frogger have a chance for development? [ 12-09-2001: Message edited by: Mario's Other Brother ]
AtariDude #2 Posted December 10, 2001 This is a tongue in cheek article but it does raise some important issues with some of today's games. Today's games are extremely violent and there are very few lovable characters in them (except for Sonic and Mario that is). I happen to play Counter-Strike on the net and things have gotten pretty bad with the cheaters using auto-aim and wallhack. As soon as someone starts doing well, the accusations of cheating surface and then the flaming begins. Another example is Parasite Eve and Silent Hill series for the Playstation. Both games are great graphically but have horror in them. Sure there was Halloween for the Atari 2600 but it was not the least bit scary or creepy. I thought the Michael Meyers character in the game was silly. I wonder what types of games are going to be released next.
Callipygous #3 Posted December 10, 2001 Dude, you are right about Mario being an endearing character ( he is my brother, ya'know). Of course, he dates all the way back to DK. I don't want to rewrite the article, but one could see the same sort conversation about DK. Q. "So he tries to save a half-naked chick, right?" A."Umm, well you really hardly see her" Q. "Okay, but when he climbs up to the ape, they have a big fight with weapons, no?" A. "Well, actually Kong just flees to the next level" I afraid the developers would have to mix in some sex and violence.
AtariDude #4 Posted December 12, 2001 That would have ruined Donkey Kong for sure. Did you know that Donkey Kong was really supposed to be called "Stubborn Gorilla" but since the creater spoke very little English (he was Japanese), he looked up the word stubborn in a Japanese -English dictionary and get the word Donkey and Kong for Gorilla. Thanks to the Phoenix book: 3rd edition for that tidbit of information.
liveinabin #5 Posted December 12, 2001 behind all the blood, tits and guns, todays uninspired games ARE those games of old. Take any 'next gen' game and you can find its ancestor in 2d on the Atari, with very few exceptions.
