Does anyone know what games were released without boxes and/or manual/instructions?

I hope this wasn't asked before in a previous thread.

 

However, I have a TERRIBLE time getting any results when I use the search feature - so I just thought I'd ask.

 

A thread that I read last night about Eli's Ladder (and how SKU got that one for free - very cool if it was legit) got me thinking.

 

Marco had mentioned that Eli's Ladder did not come with a box. Someone had asked how it was packaged, but no one ever replied.

 

Does anyone know what makes a "complete" Eli's Ladder?

 

Which brings me to the question which prompted the thread in the first place:

 

Is there a list of what it takes for a particular title to be complete?

 

I usually associate the following with a complete game:

 

Box

inner tray if it came with one

manual/instruction booket

cart

anything special to that particular game (for example, Space Shuttle comes with that cardboard cockpit thing)

 

I don't count posters or correspondance cards or what not - marketing materials, etc.

 

Maps would count; hint books, etc.

 

So, has someone already done this, and if so, where might one find it?

 

If not, I guess my curiousity can be limited to one question:

 

What games, if any, were released without a box?

i believe that dog food mail order game can't remember it might have had a box not sure. prototypes have no box. it would be hard to beleive atari would sell a game without a box at retaile stores. it would have to special order i would think.

"Off The Wall" has no box I know that, I don't think Romox or Begeal Bros. games have boxes either.

Chase the Chuckwagon had a box, I believe there was an auction on ebay in the last week.

Tooth Protectors just came in a stryrofoam shell.

Most homebrew games and hacks,, until recently, were cartridge only or with just a manual.

That shows on top the ones that do not have a box scan in the database. But there are too many gaps for you to make sense of that.

 

R=10:

Beagle, Romox, Xante (well, there is a generic box shown for Solar Storm)

Pepsi Invaders does have a box but no instructions.

Nobody has seen a box for Air Raid but there is rumor of one.

Answer boxes are all the same, just the game instructions are glued to the box.

 

R=9:

Tooth Protectors (came in a styrofoam "box")

 

All Bomb boxes are the same/generic with the instructions showing through a big cutout

 

R=8:

Diagnostic Cartridge

Survival Island

Sword of Saros

 

I ran out of patience at R=3. That is all the regular releases I can think of that don't have boxes.

Diagnostic Cartridge

 

While this one didn't come in a box, it did come in a baggie with a small insert (a yellow piece of paper)and technically the Field Service Manual and some of the inserts for it are the instruction guide.

This is PERFECT! Exactly what I was looking for.

 

I actually did try that sort option, but it was impossible for me to determine if there was no box or manual, or if the database simply didn't have an entry.

 

I sincerely appreciate the information. Hopefully it will be of use someday, when I encounter some of these toughies!

I was only listing the US NTSC carts. Once you wander south of the border or across the pond, all kinds of exceptions show up.

 

There are also some games which did not come in regular size boxes, but were packaged with controllers or something special:

It seems as though these at least had boxes (unlike Eli's ladder, for example.) I'm still trying to figure out how they packaged them...

 

What about those Mythicon games. Did they come in an abnormally long box? I saw some on eBay recently, but the boxes look odd to me.

The Mythicon games have a small box and the instructions are also very small. This is a picture of a few different box sizes and the Mythicon box is right in front of a standard size atari game. And the Smurfs game is on the left and the Smufrs game itself was not boxed but it along with the tape deck and 3 tapes and cart were in that oversized box.
